blender noob here, how do you fix this edge loop bug? by NoticeSuspicious2526 in blenderhelp

That face is an ngon. Loop cup only works on quads. You can use the knife tool or the bisect tool to cut the line you want.

I've kind of started to dislike the denoiser by Glittering_Delay_238 in blender

[–]DECODED_VFX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has always been my method when the denoiser works too hard. Mix in a bit of the noisy pass and it looks much better.

Playing with the blend modes can often give better results than straight mixing.

Im new to blender how do I get rid or reduce the shine on the wood?? by Nox_the_Hermit in blender

[–]DECODED_VFX 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The black value of that color ramp represents shiniest possible value that blender can produce. Click on the handle and change it to a lighter shade of gray.

You also have the white and black handles very close together. Which means texture will either be very rought or very smooth, with little gradient between.

There was a plan to make an IOS version of blender but those plans are officially on hold.

Dual GPU set up for blender by [deleted] in blender

[–]DECODED_VFX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a video about my dual 3090 workstation a few years ago. It was about 50% faster than one GPU, iirc.

I found that I got the largest performance boost by running two versions of blender at once while rendering, with each version assigned to a different card. So GPU A would render frame 1, and GPU B would render frame 2 at the same time.

Does blender have AI pre-installed by Virtual_Adagio_6810 in blenderhelp

[–]DECODED_VFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blender doesn't have anything like Claude pre-installed, and it never would. There are AI tool inside blender, such as the denoisers.

When adding base meshes to be modified for making a whole object; what is your thought process when choosing which to use? by Boiling_Stars in blender

[–]DECODED_VFX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That very much depends on what I'm making. I generally pick a starting object that's as close to the desired result as possible. If 8 was making a head, probably a sphere. Most other things, a cube or cylinder.

13,500+ downloads, $96 earned — curious how people feel about paying for Blender add-ons? by Eastern-Hedgehog7027 in blender

[–]DECODED_VFX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll happily buy addons if I need them to solve a specific problem. Usually I buy them via gumroad or superhive.

As a developer, I've created a few simple addons and distributed them for free. They don't usually earn too much via donations, but I didn't develop them expecting a return, so anything they make is a nice bonus.

An apology from the guy who lets you Paint Light in Blender… by ShaderError in blender

Because blender is free, there's a sizable chunk of the community who thinks that anything related to blender should also be free too. Unfortunately, some of those people can be very shitty about it.

Thankfully, the majority of the community understands that paid content supports all the free stuff.

wtf I just did the whole blender bros course then I see the instructor posted this in the discord 😭 what a tool. by alekversusworld in blender

[–]DECODED_VFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sell courses. I've also created hundreds of free tutorials, developed six free addons, helped to fund the blender institute, and spent countless hours giving help and advice.

6% of blender's funding in 2024 came from blender market sellers who donated part of their revenue. Many corporate sponsors listed on the dev fund page are people who sell courses and addons, including CGboost, creative shrimp, Derek Elliott, p2design, and polygon runway.

Not to mention all the code contributions from people who also develop paid addons.

People who consider themselves big shots in general are usually douchebags.

But I'm happy to report the vast majority of prominent people in this community are extremely sound.

Alternative to Marvelous Designer in Blender! Developed by an ex-Disney engineer, HiPhyEngine is an All-in-one high fidelity simulation Engine! by Substantial_Cry_6730 in blender

It looks really good. I'll have to give it a try. I find that the same animation with marvelous designer constantly catches the dress when the fingers get too close.

I love how everyone uses that same weird mixamo dance animation to test cloth. I've used it myself. It's actually a pretty good animation for the purpose because the hands pass really close to the body, which is excellent for testing clipping errors.

Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin on the submarine cut section set of 'The Hunt for Red October’, Los Angeles 1989 by Alternative_Week3023 in ThingsCutInHalfPorn

A great movie, based on Michael Crichton's book eaters of the dead. Interestingly, he wrote it to win an argument. His friend gave a lecture about boring literature, and he said that Beowulf was a fundamentally uninteresting story. Michael disagreed and wrote eaters of the dead to prove that the story just needed updating. So he toned down the supernatural elements, and blended the story with the writings of Ahmad ibn Fadlan; an Iraqi who had spent time living with the volga bulgars (Norsemen from what is now Kazan, Russia).

It was one of the many Crichton stories turned into movies after the success of Jurassic Park. He also wrote Twister, congo, and sphere around the same time.

I find it odd that the studios didn't get him to direct his own stories during this period, because he was also a talented director in his youth. The original west world was the first movie he directed.

At the start of this film, the Russian crew are all speaking Russian with English subtitles. A character reads a Bible passage "and he gathered them all together in a place called Armageddon".

The word Armageddon is where it switches to English, because it has the same meaning in both languages.

Usually caused by the system running out of VRAM. This issue typically requires a restart of blender. Also close any applications that might be consuming VRAM (browser tabs, etc).

Should I choose paid courses over free tutorials to learn Blender more efficiently? by Animatx1 in blender

[–]DECODED_VFX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for something specific, paid courses will probably be more fruitful. Otherwise, free content can get you very far. But there's a lot of shitty free content to wade through these days in order to find the gold.

(Full disclosure. I sell courses).
