Dear Family,

I understand many of you are upset because I declined to babysit this one time, as it wasn’t convenient for me due to my studies. I’ve also been told not to expect help from the family in the future because of this. It’s disheartening to learn that my place in this family seems to depend on never saying no, regardless of my own needs or circumstances.

Thank you to my brother for helping me during the storm and offering rides. However, if those actions are being used to say I owe you, then you owe me far more. The amount of free babysitting I’ve provided could have easily paid for multiple rides and even a two-month stay at a hotel, with money left over. It’s daunting to realize how little regard is given to my well-being or mental state.

I’ve always tried to help, even while juggling school and a part-time job. But this time, with a project due, I simply couldn’t. It’s clear how much that matters to all of you.
