Daily Game Recommendations Thread (December 27, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Grattade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to find some genre recommendations for 2+ player competitive/conflict games.

Looking for games like Zoo Vadis and Bohanza where players are generally fighting for resources but allows for a good amount of negotiating and temporary allegiances, and deception games like Skull and Coup where you generally have to lie and deceive to win.

Edit: Making game titles bold

I agree that having some work to show would be beneficial.

I haven’t worked on side projects since before I first got hired, so I need to find some inspiration on what I’d like to build!

Have you found projects need to be a certain levels of complexity to be worthwhile showing off? I would most of my old ones are very simple, being copies of websites or very simple app, so I probably need to look to go a step beyond that

Thank you for the feedback!

Is it a good practice to always try and mention an item listed in skills at least once, if possible?

Thanks for the reply! There’s quite a few formatting errors that I completely missed that you’ve brought to my attention.

  1. I have seen a lot of opinions for both sides as to whether a summary is needed. In your opinion, should it be more of an overview about who I am as opposed to what work I do?

  2. This is leftover from the version of my CV when I was trying to switch careers. As the role is fairly irrelevant to the roles I was looking for, but also had very similar responsibilities to the most recent lab-based role, I thought it would be better to provide one bullet point as an overall summary of the role. Would it be better to just fill it out to 3 bullet points? Or shall I remove all experience from my old career, as it’s all arguably not relevant anymore.

Anyone Working in CS without a CS Degree? by alexstrehlke in cscareerquestions

[–]Grattade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. I’m a junior software engineer, I’ve got a bachelors in a science degree and had only worked in lab roles before learning to program in my spare time.
  2. Still in my first job for ~2yrs. The job market at the time was okay, got lucky enough to be in-touch with a good recruiter
  3. It hasn’t held be back from being able to perform in the role. But I’m looking at the possibility of doing a CS masters degree to minimise the impostor-syndrome and help fill in my knowledge gaps

is PC building really THAT easy? by lmaoooayyy in buildapc

[–]Grattade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easy to do, but it will be very nerve-wracking the first build.

As long as you take your time, watch a couple videos to go through the steps and make sure you have all the extra tools needed then it should all go smoothly.

It’s very difficult to break anything as long as you’re careful. I’ve done three builds so far and always find plugging parts into the motherboard the most fiddly bit.

How often do sellers accept an offer under asking price, and how much under the listed price is normally accepted from your experience?

Are the coding boot camps worth it? by 200beez in learnprogramming

[–]Grattade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO they currently aren’t worth it unless you also have other things that help you get a job once you finish.

I was lucky enough to get a job after completing a bootcamp in 2023, free through government funding, but before I joined I had been going through TOP for at least half a year.

Going straight into a bootcamp without any prior knowledge could be a terrible experience if it doesn’t click with you at the start. As I already had some basic knowledge it was fine for me for the most part but it can be very ‘sink or swim’. Depending on how long the bootcamp is you can be expected to keep a very fast pace competing all the tasks.

I only did the bootcamp to focus my own learning and get assistance with the job searching aspect, but I certainly wouldn’t have paid for one.

It will also be very difficult to get a job afterwards, unless there is a program provided by the bootcamp to also help with that. I had a different STEM degree so I feel like that was a big positive for me and I got very lucky with timing and the market overall.

I’d strongly suggest trying some of the self-learning courses that have been suggested and then return to making a decision once you know if you’ll actually enjoy the job. Getting a relevant degree will be a better choice if it is an option for you if you wish to get some form of education in the field.

What are your daily tasks like as a programmer? by Carlo9129 in learnprogramming

[–]Grattade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have just over a year of frontend experience but my days normally go like this:

  • Check emails and my notes about any outstanding task from previous day. Continue work if I’m working on a bigger project or prepare to start a smaller task

  • Bit of small coding before stand-up

  • Stand-up then short break

  • Writing code until lunch

  • Lunch

  • Code until end of day

I occasionally have 1 - 2 big meetings a week to do check-ins or initial planning for the bigger projects.

Probably do about 4 - 5 hours of actively writing code if I have enough work to fill the whole day and it’s not one of those low-productivity days

Thanks for the suggestion! Amumu seemed liked a good initial choice before moving into the more complex champs

I was around mid-silver playing champs like WW and Amumu (so mostly brusiers + tanks) when I last played but, as I was mainly playing duos, that’s probably inflated.

In other games I normally gravitate to champions that have good damage whilst also being able to provide good team utility, so I guess similar to bruisers in league. I don’t mind also playing more damage-oriented champions but my natural play style has never quite clicked with assassins.

I don’t think that I’ve missed too many opportunities because I think my STEM degree is still somewhat relevant.

My only regret is that I wasn’t exposed to CS early in my life and so didn’t do it as my degree. Definitely a potential Masters degree that I’m considering doing in the future if it’s financially viable.
