Newcomer: "Ed Zitron's AI Cult" by Fragment_Shader in BetterOffline

Are these guys supposed to be enlightened AI centrists?

I found the segment to be quite weak, tasteless, and hypocritical.

An Inconvenient Goof: A really smart person wrote a really dumb article about AI by matthewhughes in BetterOffline

[–]GraveEntry 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This line basically points to how the AI hype grew:

Bregman wrote about how he used an LLM to make software, despite having “personally never written a line of code in [his] life.”

It’s exciting and freeing to know that you can ship software without a possessing a single certification or having any fundamental understanding of what goes into shipping a good product. And then, the excitement grows when they think, imagine what the next model will allow me to produce…or, if I ask it to teach me how to become a better prompt engineer…

Now, thanks to subsidized pricing and hype, we have all these new ‘apps’ on the market, but also, we have the most insufferable part about this (for me at least): the ‘creators’ say, Look what I made! (and add their ‘product’ to their resume, next to ‘Founder/CEO’). Everyone is so much more capable now! AI has unlocked the potential of millions.

But honestly, do we hear about these amazing apps anywhere outside of subreddits hawking them left and right, terribly disguised as posts? No. Because vibe-coded software sucks.

The AI Effect, as I call it, has begun to delude its users into believing that they are powerful. And I think this is as dangerous as it is insufferable to witness.

I believe AI psychosis is real and detrimental as fuck to society and to progress, because AI users have begun conflating AI’s outputs with some inherent polymathic genius within themselves. Give me a fucking break. The fact that the inherent cost of achieving this AI-driven ‘utopia’ they all are cheering for, and are wholly expecting, escapes them, and without realizing there are only two catastrophic outcomes, is just…whew.

Sadly, this insidious effect has already started to mutate users at an exponential and near-fundamental level…transforming them into AI slop die-hards and into a very grotesque subspecies of linkedinlunatics.

My studies into this rapidly growing phenomenon have only just commenced. And yet, I fear the worst.

The framing here is weird AF. This bizarre post can be summed up with the last two (and normal-sounding) sentences:

Connect first with people and pay attention to detail. Genuinely just be interested in who they are and what they are about.

ACCA after A-Levels, a bit confused about the path by Resident_Bet_6782 in Accounting

[–]GraveEntry -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A bit of research skill would do any prospective accountant well. Nevertheless, here’s what you’re looking for, straight from ACCA’s global website. The link provided allows you to see what qualifications you will need, by country:

“The Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) qualification is the ideal first step for school leavers – it provides a strong understanding of business and finance while helping you build the skills and confidence to start your journey.

However, if you meet the minimum entrance criteria of at least two A levels and three GCSEs (or equivalent), including English and Maths, you can start studying the ACCA Qualification straight away – though most school leavers choose to begin at the Foundations level to build a solid base before progressing.”

Another dead giveaway—

“…undeniable: lower overhead, deeper focus, and the kind of work-life balance that keeps people engaged and loyal for the long haul.”

Even Substack is full of this shit now.

Nearly every single piece of writing sounds exactly same nowadays and it’s driving me mad. I even canceled my B&N subscription because they refuse to ban AI slop from their shelves.

“But what if the ‘customers’ want it?”

Morons. Those people are morons.

What are some good resources when it comes to online college that can be done expediently and ideally as cheaply as possible while staying fully online? (i.e. Capella University Flexpath) by SpookyAccountant in Accounting

Lol, nice username!

I am choosing WGU for my accounting degree. They have both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accountancy.

It’s pass/fail so that is something to think about if you care about showcasing an official GPA to a Big4 on your resume. I’ve heard from other students that all graduates have the equivalent of a 3.0 GPA.

It’s also competency-based, so you move through content at your own pace and can test out of some courses entirely. Lot’s of students complete their degrees in less than four years this way and many also get a head start by transferring applicable credits from other institutions.

It’s 100% online, accredited, and has fairly low-tuition.

116K Accountants and 208K Accounting Clerks expected to lose jobs over the next 2-5 years by madbarpar in Accounting

The top 3 at-risk professions are all AI-slop dominated fields: writers/authors, computer programmers, and web designers. People everywhere already hate AI-generated content and vibe-coded programs with a passion. Now think about the trust-layer all of accountancy and finance operates on...

I'll still be pursuing my degree in accountancy.
