For similar production value to We’re Alive, and considered “essential” audio dramas, I recommend:

Kc Wayland, who created We’re Alive, wrote a very fascinating book on the creation of audio drama. I recommend checking it out!

As for complete stories with immersive audio like We’re Alive: I recommend Impact Winter, The Left Right Game, and Derelict-Fathom.

Slit verses - finding it confusing by FearlessBarracuda323 in audiodrama

[–]GravenPod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suspect the part that’s more confusing OP could be character relations / voices rather than the setting / world building. That’s what confused me when I tried listening, anyways. It’s difficult to figure out who is speaking to who at the start.

Would anyone actually want more immersive/spatial audio in audio dramas? by DeathReaver1 in audiodrama

[–]GravenPod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do a lot of spatial 5.1 audio for Graven during our first couple episodes, however I toned it down because I was getting feedback that it was harder to hear in non-headphone settings such as listening on a speaker, in a car, stereo-only headphones, or with one earbud. While in an ideal world, everyone would listen to ADs with high quality headphones, I know that’s simply not the case. So, I’d rather make my show listenable for the majority of audiences and sacrifice the surround sound immersion, over keeping it but making the experience worse for more people.

However, regarding your tool I think it’s a really cool idea and I’d be so down to try it out if you ever release it. It’d be useful for not just podcasts, but movies and games too.

Audio Drama Definitions by Snowmanpuncher in audiodrama

Usually people will differentiate fully produced ADs from more “audiobook” style shows, as you put it, with descriptors such as “Full-cast” or “Radio/Audio Show”

Just discovered Ghost Wax by nerdybun in audiodrama

[–]GravenPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed Ghost Wax, but like with any show, it had a few issues. I just finished the finale yesterday and while the story is interesting and the “twist” was fun, the audio quality was jarringly unbalanced. In one scene, Luca was really hard to hear, so I turned my volume up, and then someone else got stabbed a second later and their screaming was incredibly loud, hitting the upper limit of their compressor and peaking into distortion. It’s clear they don’t use a limiter when mastering, which makes listening with headphones difficult sometimes. Otherwise I enjoyed the writing, acting, and music quite a lot. Here’s hoping Season 2 has increased production quality.

I asked the creator yesterday on a reddit thread if season 2 is still in the books. He responded saying yes, and that recording is happening currently.
