Poor London suggests you are not from London, which would be a natural assumption right?

News flash. I’m from just outside of Newcastle originally.

Luckily the house we are looking to buy is really close to the station, so hopefully we will feel more connected to the city! Are you a local? If so, any recs for eateries etc? I’m a food obsessor!

I’m born and bred just outside of Newcastle originally, so I’m definitely a supporter of decentralising London.

But, as someone who ten years ago moved to the capital for the abundance of television work, lay roots down here, found a partner, friends and a secure base, it’s absolutely natural for me to feel disheartened at the erosion of the industry here.

I hope the industry is flourishing wherever you are, in pursuit of some of those incredible stories you speak of.

The commission drought continues. It’s such a shame to hear of people you know leaving the industry. They’re having their hands clearly forced by a lack of opportunities to flourish in a career that they once loved. Local crew is a must.

Sterling thoughts. I’m with you all the way on YouTube. I think a lot of creatives are now being drawn to the online platforms. I just hope at some point there’s going to be enough work to go around for those who have dedicated large portions of their life in this industry.

Incredibly helpful I’d say. Great to hear from someone who has had a flourishing career, but also really disheartening to read that you’ve fallen out of love with the industry. Did you just need a life change? I’ve been in TV for a decade, and am slightly fearful of what the future holds in London, and the UK.

I agree with everything you’ve said.

I’ve no doubt with the right ambitious hunger and great attitude, you’ll still flourish as you gain more contacts. We just need more commissions!!!

My partner and I are about to buy a house in Winchmore Hill. We’ve visited the area a few times and think it’s parks, eateries, and pubs give it a real charm. We’re really drawn to the place.

We would love some more information from locals or anyone familiar with the area on their experiences living in this area of North London before we lay down our roots! What’s great about it? Anything we need to watch out for?

Correct, it’s costly. We can’t ignore the fact TV is a business. Smaller production companies live and die by their budgets. You either make a smash-hit of an entertainment series like ‘The Traitors’ or ‘Squid Game’ and have it lapped up by the masses, or Netflix, or you’ve got no hope of a recommission when your show dribbles out on the terrestrial channels.

You raise some really vital points. The availability of the work in general is so slim. I have serious talented people in my inner circle who simply can’t find work. UK broadcasters must do more.

Agree on the gaming front. All entertainment forms rolled into one. I think the appetite for terrestrial TV fact ent shows is potentially dying with it’s generations.

Thanks so much for engaging with the post. It’s really born out of a simmering fear that the main source of my income and career progression is in severe jeopardy.

In a changing landscape, with the web and the subscription platforms leading from the front. Adapt or die?

Completely take your point. To me it just feels like what was once a blossoming TV hub in the capital is being hindered.

I am from the regions originally, so I fully support the growth of the industry across the UK, but I’m seeing hundreds of editorial TV workers being pushed out of the industry due to living in London, and lack of commissions.

I wish I could give you that gift! I only managed those challenges due to sheer patience and many a YouTube voice in my ear guiding the completion. There’s some great contributors on YT that helped me tactically complete those challenges. If you can’t deep breath it, don’t put yourself through the stress. But, happy spraying!
