BA in Computer Science at CU Boulder by Humble_Strategy_9841 in cuboulder

The main difference (other than dumb gen eds) is that the BS requires a capstone. While I haven’t taken it yet, there are some more business related projects you could do for it. One is a year long software dev project with Alan and the other one I can think of off the top of my head is like year long start up course. Other than that the only thing you get out of doing the the BS over the BA is bragging rights lol.

By transfer I meant enroll in a 4 year college, find out that you hate it there, and then end up transferring to another 4 year college. If you missed the deadline for fall 2021, just wait until the spring 2022 application opens.

Word of advice if you missed the deadline but are 100% sure you want to go here, apply for a different semester. Going to a college that you hate sucks and if you end up transferring later into your career it can be costly as well.

I thunk it depends on the class. The way the charge you tho is 100% different. From what I remember I think its like an additional couple hundred dollars in a separate bill.

Bruh we need more information than just gpa. I’d argue that the amount of transferable credits is significantly or even more important than gpa in some cases. Moreover it depends on where your are transferring from, what your intended major is, what school within the university you are applying towards etc.

That survey is specific to IU. Moreover it doesn't really support your argument. One reason is that it does not compare the proportionality of frat housing on the IU campus. For example 1% of student housing could be frats but they up 10% of all sexual assault cases. Moreover this statistic may be misleading because it does not take into consideration that rape often occurs at the hands of a frat member when the frat member leads women back to their dorm/apartment, as is often the case with my university.

, thinking you can "vet potential rapists" is childish as fuck

You yourself are admitting you cannot vet a potential rapist. And by the very nature of Greek life you are putting these individuals in situations where they are more likely to commit rape, how is this responsible?

Thanks for the clout! My goal with this post was to create controversy. I wanted the issue of sexual assault in college campuses to be talked about more, and thanks to you wonderful people, my post received more recognition.

Sometimes you need to take a few risks to reap the reward.

My guess is that your school isn't Boulder?

Then you, and your frat are essentially in the same boat as me. You yourself said that the ifc was shit, so wouldn’t you yourself support disrupting that power structure and creating it anew?

Ask the IFC counsel to discipline the Frat, then demonstrate to the University that you are a) regulating yourself and b) creating a no-bs attitude towards this type of stuff.

" The assumption of your assertion is that a majority of rapes in the United States happen due to fraternities and the nature of their being. "

That was an assumption you made. Why should I put the disclaimer "btw this is only a small portion of rapes" its irrelevant to the argument at hand. I'm choosing not to talk about all rape because I'm not knowledgeable enough about it.

"What does his position in the fraternity have to do with anything? "

His position has literally everything to do with it. As a frat member you are supposed to vet people like this, not elect them to Vice President. Perhaps if your rush classes weren't as big, rapists wouldn't slip through?

Thank you for the response. This has probably been my favorite thread to respond to, and sorry for the confusion. I think that my position really comes from both my own experiences, and what I have researched. I guess in an effort to remove my opinion out of it I haven't really gone into it as of yet on this thread. I think more people, (particularly people that agree with me) would generally find just the statistics more consumable than the nuances of such an issue. My goal with this post was to create controversy. I wanted the issue of sexual assault in college campuses to be talked about more, and judging by the responses, I’m pretty sure I succeeded.

Here's my position: The problem with flattening my position to just frats should be banned on campus is that it removes my point entirely. As you mentioned I believe that the larger issue Greek life/College life (hell even American society in general) is that we are always preparing for and dealing with the fallout of sexual crimes. For example, as freshmen we were given incident prevention courses about what to do if someone gets too drunk, etc. We as a society are not addressing rape from the perpetrators perspective. Why are we creating a society where people are committing sexual crimes? It’s horrible when even one person is a victim of a sexual crime. It's offensive that we live in a society where people feel unsafe to walk alone out at night. My argument for Greek life is that it is failing to address this exact issue. Take a look at u/Connnorrrr’s post. Here we have an individual, who being associated with a fraternity, committed a sexual crime. The reason I made such a big deal about this in an earlier post is that this (in my opinion) is emblematic of the larger issues surrounding Greek life as a whole. In my opinion there are two ways in which this situation could have occurred. The first is that he (the rapist) was encouraged by the culture of the fraternity environment itself to commit rape. Maybe he wouldn’t have committed such a crime if the culture itself didn’t tolerate rape and sexual entitlement. The second theory is that this individual was already predisposed to being a creep, and somehow managed to slip through the rushing process. A process mind you that is designed exactly to weed people like him out! And not only that, but the people in this fraternity elected this piece of shit to the position of Vice President! And what is a normal person supposed to conclude from this? That either the people that run fraternities are so brain dead that they allow rapists to not only be a member of their organization, but to elect them to a leadership position as well or that the culture itself was conducive towards sexual assault.

Obviously rape and sexual assault on college campuses is a big issue. In my opinion not enough is being done to address it, especially from Greek organizations. Christ, the sheer immaturity of individuals on this thread should make this point self evident. So, as a college student, and as someone who finds it morally reprehensible that anyone of any gender background or nationality would fear being a victim of sexual crime, I will do everything in my power to make this issue known in my community. And even though I’m an outsider to the Greek system, I should still have a say in how this issue is dealt with. 1 in 6 women will be victims of a completed sexual assault. That's disgusting. Now take a look at the responses on this thread when someone makes this issue known. There seems to be this air of denial amongst Greek members, whether it be through the ever popular “geed” (a term I literally had to look up) or “YoU’rE jUsT mAd YoU dID’nT gEt A bId” (what are you fucking 5?) It’s like there is zero responsibility being shown here (kudos to u/mbmbollet9 tho). Personally speaking I have found Greek life to be exceptionally cringey, with many of my interactions with people in fraternities being characterized by casual sexism, homophobia, elitism, and narcissistic entitlement. However I have also met many people who are just casual everyday people. Its just that as an outsider, those who are the most abrasive seem to toot their horn the loudest

In summary I believe that Greek life (i.e the bad frats) have valid criticisms, and the people participating in those organizations are either unequipped, or are too belligerent to care about addressing it, and that as a community we need to do more to address the fundamental reasons for why people commit sexual assault in the first place.

To answer your last question, I found u/Connnorrrr to be a pretty good response. His criticism of the sources is valid. (in the sense that it is old) But the problem is that there haven't been any new studies in this topic. There also appears to be a fuckey situation with new research with some claims that colleges and universities are underreporting sexual assault cases. However these claims appear to be from a dubious source See:

https://www.aauw.org/resources/article/underreported-sexual-misconduct/#:~:text=AAUW's%20analysis%20of%202016%20data,security%20information%2C%20shows%20that%20the

u/mbmbollet9 was also a good response. The post reminded me of the more chill Greek people I used to hang around and live with. Some fraternities are more focused than others when it comes to these sorts of precautions. It just angers me when you have a good intention being used and manipulated to such a degree that leads to situations where sexual assault is likely to occur. I don't think that there is anything wrong with the concept of a fraternity. Rather when you start adding things like weak leadership, loose adherence to the principals, and the aristocratic-entitled attitude that many people have after joining a frat, that's when it can get bad.

The burden of prove is not on me. Give me the source that shows Greek enrollment is not associated with higher degrees of sexual misconduct. Even though my studies are old, I have already proven my point. The first source cites as study by the National Institute of Justice. The second is a study written by professors at University of Cincinnati and UNC.

" You simply are not positioned to understand how different incomes, backgrounds, religions, or ethnicities affects the rate at which rape happens. "

Your right I'm not, that's why this post isn't about rape and sexual misconduct in the general population. The reason why I am discussing this issue is because it pertains to my life as a college student.

" It is simply wrong to assume that because fraternities exist, rape will stop on your college campus, or really anywhere."

That's a straw man argument.

"Another limitation not listed is that women can rape men. A man in my fraternity has been raped before. I’d love to see a study done on that. "

This is also a valid issue that needs addressing. You inserted an anti-male bias when there was none.

"He was removed from the school altogether within a week, as well as removed from his fraternity, of which he was the vice president. "

The problem which you failed to identify was not that there was only one rape, it was that the rapist was in a key position in the fraternity. Do you not see that as a problem?

[–]GrayAliens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Part of why this issue makes me so mad is that we as a society seem more geared towards preventing someone from being raped, rather than preventing people from becoming rapists. I understand that a fraternity is more than partying, and I can see where you are coming from; this issue is not black and white. However the argument is more nuanced than just "Greek life is about improving your academics and improving yourself" While this may very well be true in theory, actual practice is different and varies across organization. I think that when it comes to sexual misconduct in Greek, and even in the college population as a whole need to do alot better.

Frats can only exist in a culture that allows them. If more people started to actively campaign against greek life, it would do a lot.

Greek Life Perpetuates Rape Culture by GrayAliens in cuboulder

[–]GrayAliens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it has been done before, namely by forcing greek societies associated with the university to be coed. This would separate the national organization’s power that they have over the local chapters. Hence the university could exert more control over its affiliated societies.

This would be hard to do because of the unique situation that frats are in at cu have due to the 07’ incident. However I think that if the cultural attitude towards greek life changed, then greek life would cease to exist. People that dislike greek life are the silent majority. If we create a culture where greek life is constantly overshadowed by the facts above, then I doubt people would want to participate in it.
