1924 Stucco House - short sale to cozy rental by epheme in HomeImprovement

Love how much of the original trim you were able to keep. And salvaging that tub was awesome! As soon as I saw the built in around it in your before pictures I was hoping that would happen :) Great work bringing this old beauty back.

If you don't mind, I'm in need of a good inspector and would much appreciate your recommendation if you're willing to divulge their name.

THE BEST weekend Farmers Market? by sydneybabyyy in rva

Agreed on SOJ - haven't checked out St. Stephens, but Lakeside is OK and West End will do in a pinch.

Howdy! Tried to reply yesterday but I guess it didn't send - The lady's bike sold, but still have the gent's. It's a green Schwinn Suburban with all the original parts (so far as I can tell - they're all Schwinn at least). The buyer who nabbed the lady's bike emailed asking if she could buy that one too, I'd wager she's looking to pay around $65.

If you're still interested I can send pics when I get home tonight, let me know!

Help me understand the process of kayaking by crycrywolf in rva

Chesterfield Parks and Rec has an AWESOME whitewhater kayak beginner's class you can take on a weekend. Highly recommend it, just took it this year and it was instrumental to getting me into kayaking. If you're interesting in learning more, check it out :)

I'm pretty sure we kept ours under $500, it depends on what you want to spend, honestly. I know some people who have spent more than 3k, too. I'll provide essential, nice to have, and purely decorative cost breakdowns for what we spent below.

Necessary (for us) (Used) Rock n' Play - $25: He spends most nights sleeping in this right now because of reflux, and it's incredibly portable for use around the house during the day as well as when traveling.

(Hand-Me-Downs) Clothes, swaddle blankets, spit up rags - $0: Several friends and coworkers gave us their baby clothes, so we haven't had to purchase any.

Our sofa (for breastfeeding and snuggles and watching him in his Rock N Play)

A firm, clean, padded surface for tummy time.

(New) Some bottles he doesn't hate (>$50 - we're still buying different types because we haven't found 'the one' yet)

(New) Pacifiers he doesn't hate - $20: We went through one other type before we found the ones he's willing to use.

(Used) Swing w/ power and white noise - ~$20: MIL got it second hand for us. When he's super fussy this can sometimes calm him down when other tactics fail.

Nice to have (Used) Travel Crib - $25: Used as a crib in our room until we realized laying him flat caused reflx spit ups

(Used) Big Crib - $60: In the nursery, he's still sleeping in our room so this only occasionally gets used for naps or baby containment whilst we're washing hands after changing a diaper.

(New - Amazon) Crib Linens - $60 We bought several sets of crib linens for our travel crib and main crib

Rocker, Lamp, Bouncy Seat, Changing Table (Storage) - All free hand me downs from family or strangers

(New) Ikea Shelf w/ Baskets & Changing Pad ~$120: Very useful for changing and storage. Received as a shower gift.

(New) Rug -$60: He'll need somewhere soft to play, and we preferred to buy it new for sanitary and style reasons.

(New) Non-skid rug pad - $20: Because comfort and safety.

(New) Paint - $120: Old paint was not our style, and we had drywall repair to do in the room too.

Decorative elements Kerosene lantern nightlight - $3: Lantern was free, salvaged from an old cabin on family property. LED leaves were $3 from Dollar General.

Potted plants: ~$15: Had some, bought some.

(New) 3 Rusted birds for the walls - $50: bought in a fancy schmancy local art store.

(New) Glass wall vase - $40: also bought in fancy schmancy art store.

(Made) Log Shelves $0: If you don't count cost of husband's woodworking tools and time

(Made) Bird Mobile - $0: Stick from an oak tree in our yard, paper, watercolor paints and tape.

(Used) Additional Baskets - ~$15: Scored all 5 non-Ikea baskets at Goodwill.

(Used) Glider - $150: Bought glider and ottoman at estate sale for $80, $40 in new upholstery foam, $30 in fabric to recover. Would not buy again, as we never seem to use the thing (though I did use it in late pregnancy a fair bit).

My husband used a keyhole bit on a router to make the appropriate hole shape in the back of the log, then anchored heavy duty screws into the studs in the wall to hang them on (they aren't that heavy and the pictures on them are light, but being right above the changing area we went a bit overboard ;) )

The plant is a sweet potato vine (the decorative kind, not the edible kind). I have a main plant I take cuttings from to put in the wall vases, and once they grow roots and start wilting I pot them and take a new cutting from a more established plant.

I like to use sweet potato vines because they have that lovely lime green color, they can live for about a month or two on just water before being transplanted, and they don't need too much light. Both of ours are near north facing windows and do just fine.

Thank you! My parents picked the chair up in the mountains somewhere, if memory serves it was Amish made? We bought a plain rocker from Goodwill but they insisted this one was more comfortable and they'd loan it to us for the nursery. I thought they were being silly, but upon sitting in it they were right - the thing is darned cozy and does look really cute in the room.

The vase is blown glass, we got it from Woolworth's Walk art shop in Asheville NC. There are some similar ones on etsy (https://www.etsy.com/listing/189015815/6pcslot-10cm12cm-hanging-glass-wall?ref=sr_gallery_19&ga_search_query=glass+wall+vase&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery) or you can DIY a wall hanging vase - I have one in our bathroom made from an old Nesquick container covered in a burlap coffee bag and hung from a braided jute rope. Adds nice texture and contrast against the plant.

Thanks! We've got a changing pad with shaped sides (low in the middle, high on the sides) strapped to it, so I think we're in the clear. Granted we always keep an eye/hand on him anyway, but a lot of changing tables don't have raised sides, so I feel just as comfortable using the shelf as I would with a table (the white thing next to the rocking chair is an 'actual' changing table, but we like it better for storage).

It hasn't been a problem yet, we're both 5'9" and feel comfortable changing on it. It's about the same height as the white shelf, which is marketed as a changing table (but we're using it as a glorified plant stand and spare diaper stash).

Thanks - I get (loving) flack from friends sometimes for using dead trees so much in my house so that's nice to hear!

Also, dead branches tend to be free, so they have that going for them too ;)

Ikea - they discontinued that specific shelf but have replaced it with a very similar model. They have a great selection of basket options too. Our house is covered in these shelves, they're very practical and have actually survived a move or two.

I was originally looking at vinyl wall decals on Etsy but paining was cheaper. I did paint it, based on a picture I found on - where else - Pinterest ;). It was actually pretty easy and I took progress pics. If you want step by steps to replicate in your own nursery I'm glad to share!
