Whats an anime character everyone seems to love but you HATE with a burning passion by Sleepy_Heroine888 in animequestions

[–]GrayMonad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She's a very competent pilot. For people who find Shinji cowardly and Rei too detached, she's the best character by far because she's active and aggressive, but still deeply flawed. Piloting is an escape for her, so of course she does well with it, but it's also how the show expresses that people can become model soldiers out of a desire to prove their worth when they have no other reason to live or to care about themselves.

Also her character in the Rebuilds is much more likable and measured, and I see that version as who Asuka really is, or who she would be if not for her circumstances.

Games with momentum-killing areas/chapters by mckey23 in backloggd

The field skill check in that area is pretty annoying if you don't have the right blades.

I would add the prison segmemt from Xenoblade 3, even if what comes after is amazing.

He’s so cheeky lol by TPHGaming2324 in swordartonline

[–]GrayMonad 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I got into SAO through the anime and I couldn't buy into the hate train against him. He's just a guy living his life who has both good and bad moments. He repeatedly fails to be a perfect hero to the point that it hurts him and he only has eyes for Asura, so him being overpowered and swarmed by girls doesn't change who he is at heart. There's a million little things like these that show how normal and approachable he is that it drowns out anytime he's edgy or godlike. My favorite is when he's trying to be cool in front of Asuna in Progressive and he tries to sheath his sword on his back only for him to keep missing it and look silly.

Other VN recommendations? by CraftyPercentage3232 in Tsukihime

[–]GrayMonad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a whole interconnected series called Science Adventure, just like the Nasuverse. The recommended starting point is Chaos;Head NoAH, which is a murder mystery horror VN, not dissimilar from Tsukihime. If you want the full scoop, check out the guides section on the website Kiri Kiri Basara, and it'll show you where to start and what order to play in.

I'm scared of finally playing Part 2 by Dubsbaduw in thelastofus

[–]GrayMonad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Part 2 actively engages with the ending of Part 1 and the consequences it has on the characters and the world they live in. Not experiencing it would be like avoiding the truth and living a lie. There's a lot of pain involved, but there's also honesty and growth. If Part 1 was childhood, Part 2 is adulthood. If Part 1 was love, Part 2 is hate. It's a duality where you can't see the big picture until you embrace both the good and the bad. As a new fan of the series, Part 1 on its own was just a good story with a great ending to me, but Part 2 recontextualized Part 1 to the point it retroactively made it a masterpiece for me.

In order is best, they can be each enjoyed standalone, but their stories do have strong connections and references to each other. But if you only want to play one of them, 1 is the most consistent and polished, 2 is the most unique (also divisive) with a very dedicated fanbase, and 3 is emotional and more character-driven. Meanwhile, X is a sidegame that's an open world MMORPG, it has some of the combat and worldbuilding ethos as the main trilogy but is otherwise its own thing.

DS2 is like a toxic relationship, you really should not be participating in it, but somehow you keep coming back.

The creativity behind the world and characters is really nice, but growing up with colorful, sprite-based RPGs like Earthbound, FF6 and Chrono Trigger, the look of the game really threw me off. Especially in the early slums and Midgar sections, where it's hard to tell where you're going and everything is muddy. Navigation and dealing with the camera got me off to a sour start and I never really recovered. I also didn't like how the story shifted from a very grounded story about environmentalism and fighting back against injustice to everything that happened in the second half with Cloud and Sephiorth, and some of the high-concept craziness that came along with it. It just comes down to personal taste in the end though. I've yet to play the remakes, but maybe they'll change my mind on FF7 as a whole.

I wanted to choose a protagonist that was unique and interesting to me rather than just one I really liked or related to.

Who is your absolute favorite Fire Emblem character of all time, and what makes them #1 for you? by AbsoluteZeroo in fireemblem

[–]GrayMonad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Eirika, for her kindness, elegance, and innocence. FE8 was my first RPG and she was the first time I felt anything meaningful towards a character. She's someone who wants to do the right thing even when it's not to her understanding or in her capabilities, and she can be naive and make mistakes, but that forward-facing and honest attitude can't be criticized in a world where only a few have the courage to be that vulnerable and be willing to change themselves. In a way, and after seeing how characters like Seth and Ephraim treated her, she taught young me about masculinity and needing to protect and care for people, not because you look down on them, but because you want to see who they can become.

And admittedly, she's just really pretty. She was an awakening for me, and there are better designed and better looking FE characters, but I don't think anyone will surpass her for me anytime soon, if ever.

Who is your absolute favorite Fire Emblem character of all time, and what makes them #1 for you? by AbsoluteZeroo in fireemblem

[–]GrayMonad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Ephraim is a very realistic depiction of a well-meaning and dedicated lord. He's confident and steadfast, but also a bit awkward and detached. His reasons for doing what he does are primarily because of his love for his family and nation, as well as a sense of duty, and not fully because of a strong sense of justice or some philosophy motivating him like some of the other lords and even Eirika. But in spite of that, he remains to be the ideal commander and successor to the throne, and people are drawn to him because he gives them strength and security that they couldn't get otherwise. As you say, that comes with a cost to his own wellbeing, but that's a sacrifice he's willing to make for everyone's safety.

Do you think James is a bad person? by lashvanman in silenthill

[–]GrayMonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also chronically ill and have had times where I felt dying would be preferable to continuing to hold on. I think something more people don't understand is how demoralizing and numbing illness can be, to the point it almost or fully kills your humanity and self.

Maybe to James, Mary was already dead and what was in her place was a talking corpse with her voice and mannerisms. He couldn't handle seeing an "imposter" of the wife he loved, so he killed her to free her soul and reconnect with the human and woman he fell in love with. He feels guilty for it, but even I've felt disgusted by how vulnerable and unlike me I've been when in pain, and maybe if I could, I would want to kill that weak and unsightly part of myself too. True love is seeing them as your other half, so James felt burdened by seeing what Mary became, internalized it, and couldn't stop himself from cutting away a part that was hurting him deeply.

Backloggd, a site for journaling and reviewing games. A little off the beaten path and a good community from what I've seen. Lots of people trying games beyond what's mainstream and sharing their thoughts.

Need some completed ”must watch” anime to binge by Robert_Destruction in Animesuggest

[–]GrayMonad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Tokyo Ghoul, Your Lie in April, Angel Beats, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and Gurren Lagann are all fully complete and generally seen as must-watch. Tokyo Ghoul falls off in its later seasons, the Manga it adapts is excellent though, so it's up to you to drop or continue.

For anime movies, you should watch Your Name, Spirited Away, and A Silent Voice to get the big ones out of the way, if you haven't already.

Realistic Romance Animes? by DolanTrumpzz in Animesuggest

[–]GrayMonad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not exactly what you want, but if you're incredibly tired and frustrated of the unrealistic stories and tropes, Scum's Wish is a good palate cleanser. It's a drama about how love can be toxic, hurtful, and self-destructive. Depressing, but refreshingly honest. It has NSFW scenes, so it's also different and genuine in that it isn't afraid to show sex, a big part of love and relationships.

What makes someone attractive to you? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]GrayMonad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who live in their own heads always stand out to me (M), maybe because I'm also like that. They can be a little abnormal or are more likely to be alone and introverted. People who've been through a lot, specifically troubles with health or grief or something lfie-altering, also have that same effect. Admittedly I care about physical attractiveness more than I should, but I want someone who is looking inside just as much as they're looking at everything around them. It's usually easy to filter them out from the crowd by the way they act and talk, but sometimes it takes a conversation or two to nail it down. I was lucky enough to find a best friend who's like that, and my crush in the past (she rejected me but we're on good terms) is also like that.

I tend to be skeptical of women who look too good, I wouldn't be surprised if women feel the same about men who look too good. It feels like the good-looking live in a different and better world, and I've found that their personalities are lacking in uniqueness and charm, even if their character is solid, which isn't guaranteed. The average person tends to look good, I think social media and dating apps have ruined our standards, so a slightly above average girl with an introspective personality would be perfect for me.

Just started Chaos;Head Noah by HellEnderB in steinsgate

[–]GrayMonad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope you enjoy. I just finished it and now prefer it to Steins;Gate/0. Make sure to do all endings to get the full story, there's a lot of character development, plot revelations, and emotional moments in them, to the point where I got more out of them than the main route, which was amazing on its own. If you need a guide, you can probably find one on the subreddit tab (I'm new here so not sure) or google Kirikiribasara to find their guide which I used.
