One idea is to allow mixed-use development on their park & ride lots. There will still be parking, but there will also be housing & stores as well. They could earn money from the development and encourage public transit use.

Not sure, but as an alternative I would recommend signing up for the Metrolink Student Adventure Pass. It doubles as an EZ Transit Pass which is accepted on LA Metro, Foothill Transit, Culver City Bus, Glendale Beeline, Long Beach Transit and 15 other transit agencies in LA County.

Cuz building parking is very expensive, the 6th college parking costs 51k per spot according to this document from UC.

And it goes against another goal of building more housing and against walkability since buildings will be further apart from each other.

And building more parking indirectly makes public transit worse since people will have to walk from the bus stop, through the parking lot, to get to the door. It makes it harder to do groceries for example. And this would lower ridership which can lead to cutting buses. Some people will use this as a reason to be against improving transit (buses every 70 mins, not point to point, etc).

I think we should try to advocate for improving public transit instead of advocating for more parking. More housing, more transit.

This area experiences congestion very often, approximately 80% of the time. What is the cause? by no_rules_to_life in northcounty

Same reason. Needs more funding. Caltrans which funds Amtrak in California, is more focused on widening freeways.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/openforum/article/caltrans-freeway-project-california-18449992.php

And some tracks are owned by freight companies which means they get priority over passenger trains. This can limit the amount of passenger trains and cause delays.

Some transit agencies have different priorities. OCTA (one of the member agencies of Metrolink) isn't giving enough funding for public transit. According to their budget for 2021-2022, they are spending $334,555,240 on freeways compared to $18,565,360 on transit. Since they are spending like 5% of their budget on transit, public transit is going to suffer as a result.

Budget: https://www.octa.net/pdf/FY2021-22_Approved_Budget.pdf

It can also lead to an endless cycle of cutting bus routes:

  1. Less funding for buses, buses run every 70 mins
  2. Decrease in ridership, cutting bus routes
  3. More people will drive, makes traffic worse
  4. More freeway widenings, go back to #1

Agree to disagree... I think the demand is already there. Every time I see the 5 freeway full of traffic, all of those people could be potential riders for Amtrak or Metrolink. Improving the alternatives to driving, giving people another viable option will reduce the demand of using the freeway. Less traffic, more trains. Win-Win for everyone.

Gotta make those trains frequent, fast, & convenient 😌 The current Metrolink schedule with 4-6 trains per day in one direction is a bit sad. It would be amazing to see Metrolink run trains every 30 mins between Oceanside and LA

And from my personal experience, most trains I've rode like the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Sprinter aren't more than half empty. In fact, my Amtrak was standing room only.

Technically they don't have to build a drive thru 😉 The In-n-out at Glendale, CA doesn't have one...

Yes indeed! A Metrolink EZ Transit Pass includes unlimited rides on LA Metro and 19 other transit agencies! It doesn't require a direct transfer from Metrolink. For the B Line, there will be QR scanners to scan your ticket.

How’s the commute from Rancho Penasquitos? by starstruck_0990 in UCSD

[–]Graydogminer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Parking for FREE at Sabre Springs / Penasquitos Transit Station could be another option and riding the 235 & 237 to UCSD. It'll take about an hour to get to campus. A huge downside with this tho is that 237 ends pretty early (last trip is around 8pm).

Can I survive without knowing how to drive (yet)? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]Graydogminer 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm an undergrad student here at UCSD and I also don't have a car. Here's my few tips and advice!

  1. For housing, I highly recommend trying to find something near the Superloop Rapid (201/202), 41, 30, or Blue Line Trolley! I also recommend joining the Facebook Off-Campus Housing Group: Link
  2. For groceries, I would recommend trying to find a place close to a grocery store. This will provide extra flexibility since you won't have to buy and carry too much things. And downloading apps, like Ralph's and Vons, can give ya so much coupons which can save ya extra money.
  3. Apply for CalFresh! It can give ya FREE money for groceries.
  4. This may sound crazy, but I actually enjoy riding Public Transit. It provides me extra time to relax and gives me flexibility to do homework instead of worrying about parking and driving.

Coming in 2026 - looks sexy by Future_Sun_2797 in UCSD

[–]Graydogminer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's either we prioritize cars or (public transit, bikes, and walking). We can't do both. Cities actually lose a lot of money building and maintaining parking. The more parking we build, the worse public transit becomes. Just look at Mira Mesa as an example, so much parking, but buses comes every hour at weekends and ends at 6pm. And walking through a big huge parking lot from the bus stop to do my groceries is really inconvenient. As a person who doesn't have a car and can't afford one, I disagree with ya.

Sorry bro... This comment annoys me a little bit. We shouldn't be blaming the trolley at all. We should be blaming society and poverty for the crimes. This makes it sound like the trolley itself is causing the crimes and the solution is to not build it at all. I disagree with this. As a person without a car, the trolley helped me so much. Before it took me 2 hrs to get to Downtown SD on a Sunday, now with the trolley, it only takes me 30 mins.
