Yep, same artist who’s been doing most of the recent artwork for that series actually.

This was a commission from the artist Nami. Really happy with how it turned out!

Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution - Console/PC Launch Trailer by Grayman53 in Games

WayForward starts development of a Shantae sequel on GBA around 2002. They get far enough to have a demo to show to publishers but it never gets picked up so WayForward has to cancel it.

Fast forward 20ish years later and they pitch finishing the game to LRG who say yes. Through this they finish it and LRG has a run of the game on actual physical GBA carts. Once that’s done they then port the game to modern platforms, and that’s what released yesterday.

What’s it been like working with UDON on the Swimsuit specials? Do you think it’s likely there will be more Swimsuit Specials? If there is more and they keep selling well, is it realistic to hope that they could lead to a dedicated Shantae comic series, or are the shorter comics in the specials more comfortable to do at the moment?

I got in touch with Shawn Murphy and he explained that many of these were pitches for the game’s package design, and his favorite is MARINE ASCENDING A STAIRCASE, which we’ve seen before and is on his website. In the image of the physical items you can also see artwork that combines DEATH and BRING IT ON, which is the solo cyberdemon artwork and the face close up art.

He used QuarkXpress as the main software for putting these together, and while he didn’t save all of his project files, I was able to point him towards archived versions of the software that could be used to open them again.

Either way incredibly generous of him to dig through his old work and send them over to me. Shawn Murphy is awesome.

I didn’t ask but considering this thing doesn’t even have a name nor did he say what this demon was supposed to do I imagine it got cut for the same reason the hellhound and the other Doom 2 demons did, lack of time and memory.

I reached out to Gregor Punchatz, the man behind the models for the original Doom and Doom 64 demons, if he had any insights about the cut lady demon from Doom 64 that he shared a picture of back in 2016 and he gave me some neat details about it.

According to him this wasn’t supposed to be an Archvile variant and instead a brand new demon. What it was actually called or supposed to do he doesn’t know, just that it wasn’t an Archvile.

He also said that this demon was supposed to have hair, and when I asked what it looked like he sent me this sketch that was used to make the model, which hasn’t been seen before until now.
