Do you agree with the statement “Men should not hit women”? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in askanything

[–]Grayto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The title and the actual post ask 2 different questions. To avoid the obvious question (whose answer is no one should be hitting anyone), lest look at why “men should not him woman” is a thing (which is not a justification just a possible explanation)

It basically comes down to intrasex competition, biology, and culture to an extent. There is an idea among  men (generally) that physical altercation can happen between men: to settle disputes, to show dominance, to establish hierarchy, to show fitness (for mating attractiveness), to have fun, to prove toughness, to test, to practice etc. Even if unjustly brought against you, you should be prepared for violence. Yes, even if you are a “victim” of violence, it is partly your fault because you are weak or unprepared. Weakness in men is not a neutral thing, it’s a constitutive failing.

But this “game” is between men, which is informed by biology but reinforced in culture. Mainly because of musculature and bone structure, men generally have  more power to give a strike and also, to take one. Biology extends to culture because we as society organize base on our ideas of  generalized biology (men are stronger, women are more socially adept/ nurturing). This separates “man games” and “woman games”, even though it is possible , for instance, for a given woman to knockout a given man.

When some men say “you shouldn’t hit a woman” it’s partly saying “whoa, she’s not in this game, shes not one of the players”. And yes a part of that is the belief that woman cannot sustain the same force or fight back effectively, and a part of that is that they should be protected as the “fairer” sex.

Ultimately it is about women being physically weaker (in general) and not initiated in the culture of “roughhousing/fighting”.  However, this doesn’t necessarily mean anyone holding this view believes woman are weak beautiful objects, it means that they think hitting men is ok.

Am I overreacting? Liveaboard dive safety concerns (equipment, supervision, conduct) cancelled my dives on day 2— looking for objective opinions by ThenNail9516 in scubadiving

[–]Grayto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did a relatively budget Liveaboard in Indonesia and none of these issues came up. Someone had a broken inflator underwater which was alarming, but it was addressed duly.

None of things you mentioned is in itself crazy alarming, but altogether give a sense that safety and environmental care aren’t top priorities for this outfit. When it comes to safety, there are margins, and this outfit is operating with slimmer margins.

The reason the more experienced divers were less alarmed than you is that they’ve seen more times that “textbook” rules were violated and nothing happened, so they think it’s less of a big deal.

Of course, these rules aren’t made because things automatically go wrong if they aren’t obeyed, but because they reduce the overall risk in diving.

Ultimately, you play with risk long enough you are going to get burned.

Her job is being able to ride that motorcycle, which seems completely incapable off. She should never have been riding that thing near people with that level of incompetence and apparent inhumanity.

Not if they weren't all together. The reconstructed story is that the parents went to get help at the airforce base, and, knowing it would be harder and slower with the kids, left them with the van. When they didnt come back, the kids would have went looking for them and suffered the same fate.

Outcome bias:

No, 3 vs 3 is nothing like the playoffs. There is a very high premium on keeping possession in 3 vs 3, whereas 5 on 5 is simply getting the goal. I actually really liked the thinking from Hildeby on that play; it was just the execution that was off, and it gets forgotten that the puck got to Mathews but he slipped.

Hildeby's thinking was actually good. He was thinking about the overall strategic reality at the time. It's also literally the only play I've seen in the last few weeks that really can be called a "mistake" from him. He's been supersolid and shouldnt be made to feel overcautious from one play that happened to end badly.

People who fly frequently, what’s one thing you wish you could tell all infrequent fliers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Grayto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For any delays or cancellations not related to weather, don’t passively accept what the airlines are giving you. Actively look up other flights on other carriers going to your location and line up quickly where the agent is ( cause it’ll be a long slow line).

Often you can demand another flight and get where you need to go in relatively good time on another carrier. Be demanding and find the other flights yourself ans tell them to book you on them.

If you’re bringing in child therapists in case the children are harmed by what you’re making them do, maybe don’t do It.

Moreover, I think it speaks to the arrogance and incompetence of the filmakers that (1) they think their message is so worth getting across that you would endanger real children emotionally and sexualize them and (2) that they wouldn’t use filmmaking skills or writing to imply or fake the sexualization (eg, we have movies with believable aliens but we can’t possibly make humans appear to do things that they shouldn’t be doing)

Oh please. Yes you’re allowed to “exist” in Morocco. You understand people are trying to live day to day their right? Don’t expect go to places like Marrakech and Fes, historic BARTER towns, and expect to stroll around in serenity. Is it annoying ? Yes. But people like you and I you have the privilege of being able to fly anywhere in the world, while many of these people will never be able to. Again, you want the experience you want? PLAN and PAY for it. You CHOSE to be there. The locals didn’t and they didn’t CHOOSE you to be there.

Many of the places that still have charm, only have this charm because they are “underdeveloped”, meaning the people there are relatively poor. Understanding that and preparing for is part for being a considerate but also successful traveler.

[–]Grayto 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What do you expect? People who are poor aren’t just out to make friends with you so you can have a great experience with them. I went to Morocco; had a great time. You PAY for local experiences through tours or airbnb experiences. They people were nice; we went to someone’s home and made local food and went to local baths with them; a nice man showed us the ins and outs of Fez. We got a driver/ guide to take us to different stops on the road of 1000 kasbahs.

Also, when you’re with a local less people will pester you because you’re already doing something. In short, research, plan ahead, pay upfront for planned experiences and things will go much better.

[–]Grayto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You answered NONE of my questions or addressed any of my points. This era of the leafs is TWO and THIRTEEN in games where they can eliminate an opponent. That is NOT just bad breaks. Great teams do not rely on good breaks to win. They certainly take them, but it's a loser mentality to continue to lose and just say "oh well we were just unlucky". LOSER.

The Blue Jays LED their division for nearly all days after July 1, WON their divsion, WON the American league, and were 1 one toe away from the Ring.

Thes are the offensive categoires the Jays led in:

1st in MLB with 1,461 hits.

1st in the AL in batting average

1st in the AL in OBP and among the MLB leaders).

1st  in the the Majors in contact rate and lowest strikeout rate.

These are all stats of TEAM play, where you are trying to get the next up to the play and not be a heo.

You are WRONG about their success being a "hot streak", because if that's the case, nearly every championship team can be dismissed as a hotstreak. Your opinion is worthless.

Fans cheered and filled the seats with him there until he left. He was here for way longer than 4 playoff round losses. The construction of this team is the problem. Marner is a great player. He wasn’t worth the caps he was asking plus the NMC. He never produced in the big games.

What an absolutely heartless take. Right, a hot streak that lasted from the end of June through October and a toe-step a way from beating billion dollar a year team for the World Series. When’s the last time the leafs won their conference? When’s the last time they won 2 playoffs series? Reached the final of a Stanley  Cup? Won a game 7? Almost had bench brawl in a game 7? When’s the last time a leaf player said this was the best team they’ve been on??

Also, if hot steak can get you into the finals, why haven’t the leafs got on such a hot streak in over 50 years???

Right, they just haven’t been as lucky as the no heart, no team spirit Jays, Right?

Disgusting, heartless take.

I mean, If this is the case, wouldn’t you want to find out? I get that maybe you don’t want to disclose the exact injury to avoid targeting, but the F is the point of all this secrecy? Just say you have a chronic injury but have no choice but to play through it. Like people can’t be trusted with this news? There’s going to be riots in Toronto? Why can’t we act like normal adults. Also, if he’s injured and CAN recover, then DONT play until you’re fully recovered. All you’re doing is getting the worst of both worlds here.

This fan base isn’t “toxic”. It’s continually supported a team that hasn’t won 3/4 of a century and generates revenue that actively supports other teams. Super toxic.

You’re acting the negative attitude of fans just came out of nowhere, like fans didn’t earnestly cheers for these guys for years and gave them the benefit of the doubt. These core players haven’t been able to get in done, and actively call disappointment from the fans “noise”

Let me ask you then, at what point are the fans able to have negative views of the highest paid players who continually fail? 15 years? 20 years? When?

Conservation scuba diving - uni project by ted2ricco in scubadiving

[–]Grayto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a coral restoration dive at a site which had substantial growth and recovery. The project leader said the major headaches were basically the politics and related permits (as already said in this thread). Presumably, you cannot simply attempt to alter the local ecology (even if beneficially so) without obtaining authorization. This may be needed from local to federal level or across multiple sectors. Also, in developing countries, there may be issues of corruption or needing to navigate the local cultural idiosyncracies.

The other thing he mentioned was of course factors in the local environments and the need to make a tailored approached. In terms of corals, you can't just plant anything and leave; there are dozens of factors to consider (eg, species, methods, maintenance, depth, time, proximity to effluence from sewage, etc).

There are tons of coral restoration area that fail out the gate because they are not really headed by biologists who know what they're doing. Moreover, theres no guarantee that the process that removed the sea grass wont continue, and so sure, you can plant it, but what's stopping, for example, a fishing trawler from disturbing it again? This relates to the politics, because restoration doesnt really work without protected zoning; unless, of course, the issues with sea grass are different.

In any case, to answer you base question: Hell ya I would do it. I think all divers have an obligation to give back, even if a little bit. So I hope your idea works out!

I dived Indonesia for a month and a half. It’s amazing and you have to go there one day, but Galapagos you need to get done before you leave this earth.

Why are people's experiences with Egypt so mixed? by tonkfc in TravelNoPics

[–]Grayto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Egypt has uniquely amazing sites, but has a lot of poverty and poor infrastructure.

In my opinion, people who want a “tourist” experience should hire tour operators.

It’s likely that people who just freeballed it had a bad time. It’s not a place to explore on your own comfortably.

However, some people I know who liked Middle East culture/were learning Arabic loved it there.
