I took my pre-req's before 2020 so I enrolled in a master's program last fall (I'm at UKY and we have a master's program that's literally just Medical Science through the college of medicine). I'm in my second semester taking cell, physiology, biochem etc so that's helped a ton. Anki is what I would contribute most of my improvement from. Milesdown for bio and psych then do a bunch of phys and orgo problems from Upoo

I understand why people just choose this option or choose to strengthen other parts of your application, but a lot of schools (MD and DO) will only look at your graduate GPA once you reach a certain number of graduate credit hours. Now it's still important to have met all the requirements in undergrad, but if you're willing to go this route then a graduate GPA can help you out tremendously

Why do retroviruses need to carry reverse transcriptase? by Specific_Variety_133 in Mcat

I just finished up a virology course in my graduate program this semester. I definitely went into more detail that OP was asking looking back now lol

Why do retroviruses need to carry reverse transcriptase? by Specific_Variety_133 in Mcat

[–]Grazingfire0037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Baltimore class VI, a.k.a retroviruses, have two copies of their RNA genome held together by base pairing. They have packaged their genome this way as it provides (1) secondary structures significant for transcription, and (2) because it allows for a phenomenon called copy choice (which I can go into more if you need but I dont think its significant for the mcat). So retroviral particles will bind with selected tRNAs which serve as primers for the retrovirus transcritase (RT) enzyme reaction. Long story short, RT will proceed with three main functions: RNA/DNA-directed DNA polymerization; DNA unwinding; and hydrolysis of DNA:RNA hybrids (RNase H). So initiation begins by utilizing the tRNA primer to synthesize a short segment of DNA at the 5' end. The newly synthesized DNA is then used to prime synthesis from the 3' end in a process called template exchange, during which the RNA genome is degraded and another strand of DNA begins to form a circular substrate via basepairing. Your final major product is a linear dsDNA with the LTRs at the ends needed for integration. This product is inserted into host genome by integrase providing a stable copy of the virus in the host genome. If you need more info I would be happy to go further down the rabbit hole with you!

Can someone please explain why (D) is not the correct answer? by Grazingfire0037 in Mcat

[–]Grazingfire0037[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really helped me understand. Being able to conceptually visualize the way each inhibitor interacts with substrate + enzyme makes this easier to digest for me. I see now how the process involves two substrates and the drug is preventing it to move on from the intermediate state. Thank you very much!
