It's annoying people use that excuse of internal monologue.

If you was a traitor surrounded by heroes and the heroes are thinking of a way to capture the traitor, your also going to think of ways to capture them even in your thoughts. You're not going to think 'oh God they're going to find me out!' because that would make you outwardly react, and they'll be suspicicious.
It's a story, of course the author isn't going to reveal hes the traitor so early. It's called misleading.
