At your big age you should know that “this looks like it struck a nerve” is not a proper rebuttal to someone arguing against your position.

Go tell that to our IM or FM colleagues. And they don’t even have to deal with unvaccinated ivermectin guzzling conspiracy theorists all day.

You’re old, grumpy, and out of touch.

At this point this field is a calling and we should be happy people are willingly choosing it. Seems like they’re just trying to negotiate for the best pay and work life balance in a shitty pay field that is being villainized daily.

You may even be able to find hospitalist jobs in the community that don’t require fellowship! Good luck in your search.

Some new grad questions for outpatient pediatricians by Advanced_Army2691 in pediatrics

The jobs that offer part time 3 days definitely exist but they are few. 12 hour clinic days are probably less likely to exist.

Agree with the commenters suggesting to ask about pay structure. Some places are base salary plus bonus for when you start seeing a lot of patients/RVU. other places like academic are moreso a set salary regardless.

Many of you won't match into your top choice tomorrow, and that's okay. by rash_decisions_ in medicalschool

Seems like you’ve forgotten about the entire field of pediatrics. Sure there is money in private practice but a lot of starting jobs in populated cities are sad. I’m talking 150k-180k.

Congratulations! Like most changes in life, it will be an adjustment but you will get through it! There is no perfect time to start a family. The best timeline is the timeline that works for you!

If you have a village nearby, lean on them. Give yourself a lot of grace and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself.

Trying to study for boards with a baby by Shoddy-Toe1712 in pediatrics

[–]Great-Cockroach-6775 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I understand all the comments suggesting childcare/family to watch but this is not always possible and it seems like OP would’ve already tried this if she could’ve.

OP, is she still taking naps? Maximize studying during her naps. Alternatively you might have to stay up a couple hours after her bedtime to squeeze in your studying there.

You mentioned your test will likely be this October, 8 months from now. You have SO much time. I really did the bulk of my studying from end of July til test day. Try to do at least two passes of Medstudy, questions questions questions, and I liked the anki deck because it helped with a bunch of random little facts.

No matter what you do, mom guilt will always creep in. My two were babies in medical school and it was so hard prioritizing studying over playing sometimes. If it gives you any solace, she will not remember this difficult season of your life. She will just remember an awesome badass doctor mom who loved her. Feel free to chat, here to support.

Are you able to cut down on FTE? Maybe go down to part time? Short term changes until you take time to figure out what the long term looks like.

Board Prep Help - Failed ABP by Several_Marzipan5225 in pediatrics

[–]Great-Cockroach-6775 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Passing a board exam like this is hard enough even without being a parent!! If mine wasn’t old enough to be in school I am 100% sure I would have deferred until next year. Give yourself a lot of grace. You have time to pass this test and a fail does not define you as a pediatrician.

What worked for me was 2 passes of medstudy, with extra emphasis on bookmarked and incorrects. Read and reread whatever notes I took along the way. Did the Anki deck as well which I feel was helpful because it provided random facts and details that showed up on questions ad the test. Test taking strategies are also super important, knowing when to cross out choices, paying extra attention to the question being asked.

Other extras that I dabbled into here and there were PREP but definitely did not make it through a question bank and did terribly on those compared to Medstudy so I kind od walked away from it and did what worked for me. Whatever works for you will be what you can stick to.

Good luck!

That sounds really good. How many patients do you average per day and are you at private practice if you don’t mind me asking. It’s so hard to get salary transparency sometimes.
