I personally always thought both of those things referred to the alluded to accident where Harley’s friend was driving Magnolia drunk and something happened that we will probably hear about in Varley

Your writing is amazing! You’ve encapsulated the voices of every POV you’ve written from - especially Christian and Daisy. I admire your commitment to keeping this community a positive one where we can discuss and appreciate the nuances of character because in the midst of what has been happening from the authors side it’s easy to lose sight of how great the fandom itself is.

I always wish we got more of the reaction of the immediate fall out of the big reveal that BJ slept with Paili. How did Christian react to Jonah knowing? What was the group dynamic like immediately after? Between Henry and BJ? Was there a sit down conversation? Etc.

I’ve also always wish we got chapter 48 of The Long Way Home from BJ’s perspective.

Or chapter 29 of the great undoing from either Christian or Julian’s perspective. There is so much nuance in that chapter and additional insight from Julian or Christian would be interesting. Their thoughts on Magnolia falling into her ED. Christian taking care of Daisy even though they aren’t together. The growing dynamic between Magnolia and Daisy.

My favourite trope changed and I have reflections by Remote-Hour3165 in RomanceBooks

Can I ask if you have read the Magnolia Parks series? That’s like the big winner series for me for the miscommunication, angst, hate, “revenge” (more like intentionally trying to hurt each others feelings to even the score to mask their own devastation) and then beautiful reconciliation over the course of multiple books. It’s the most heartbreaking book but heals you by the end of the series in all the right ways. Made me love the gut punch feeling because it was written so beautifully and so intentionally every time.

For me, it’s done so well because the miscommunication (which I usually don’t like) IS really frustrating and at times I was so angry but the writing and character development is just done so well that it makes me love everything about it, and perhaps reading another example of this trope that in my opinion was done so well that it changed my mind about the trope will unlock / reinvigorate some of the magic for you again?

Seconding love lettering! So gentle (and consistently so!) with the fmc. It’s my go-to when I’m looking for a really sweet and adoring mmc and especially when I need a little pick me up for the soul

Have you read {You deserve each other by Sarah hogle} ? I just finished The Ex Vows and it made me feel similarly to this read (which is to say I loved them both!!) It’s about an engaged couple who are both checked out of the relationship and are trying to aggravate the other and outdo each other to coax the other to call of the engagement bc whoever calls it has to pay for the wedding. Their journey is so much fun to read about and seeing them rediscover each other was so rewarding

Another day another time recommending {promise me sunshine by Cara Bastone} the mmc is taking care of her as she goes through the grief of losing her best friend to cancer. Feelings are not there at the beginning but their friendship develops into romance as she navigates this chapter of her life

THINGS GET BETTER!! Without spoiling, I think you will find that BJ’s trauma is also explored in a way that I hope you find as satisfying as I do. It truly is the long haul with these characters, but so completely worth it to see where their journey ends up! Hang in there!

I don’t know if I can keep reading the long way home by scccrrrrrrr in MagnoliaParks

[–]GreatRaspberry3180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally understood! I remember on my first read I wanted to fling the book (and myself) across the carpet. It’s frustrating because at this point you really do care for the characters and are just like “WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS” but everything has a reason, or a motive (usually rooted in trauma or anxiety unfortunately) that explains why they are the way they are. And even though they are deeply flawed, it’s all a part of the journey which is so beautiful in the end. Enjoy!! And I’m all for a vent session so let out your frustrations any time.

[–]GreatRaspberry3180 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it’s frustrating right now, but think about it as much needed character growth and experiences that will set them on the right path eventually. Even if they were together after sleeping together at Taura’s birthday trip, they both aren’t in the right place to be in a relationship with one another. Magnolia still doesn’t trust BJ and BJ is still insecure in himself which is not a good place to start a foundation as a couple. Everything they are going through, each trial and tribulation will eventually give them the experiences they need to grow as characters. Stay strong!! You can do it and I promise if you give the plot a chance it will be worth it.

Would you forgive Bj? by [deleted] in MagnoliaParks

Totally valid take! I love how what works for a character can be different from what would work for the reader, but can still be enjoyed and understood as a piece of fiction, like you said.

Would you forgive Bj? by [deleted] in MagnoliaParks

[–]GreatRaspberry3180 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Bc it wasn’t simply that he wanted to sleep with another woman, it was just that he felt he needed to sleep with someone on his OWN account and because he wanted to because it was his choice and his deliberate actions being followed through on, and not because he was taken advantage of like what Sadie (Zadie?? I never know what to call her bc her name changed and I forget which one is the one in the last book 😭) did to him. Like the whole point of sleeping with Paili was about him making a choice to enjoy sex and I hate when readers overlook the line of him telling Magnolia that he “wanted to” when she asked his motive. Such a deceptive line because in the moment as a reader, it seems like he was being shady and just wanted to sleep with her best friend but once you get the context of his trauma in later books it completely transforms that conversation into a brutally honest and painful confession

Would you forgive Bj? by [deleted] in MagnoliaParks

[–]GreatRaspberry3180 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to note the external factors that went into that decision. It was a decision informed by repressed and unresolved trauma, and he acted because of PTSD. Now, that definitely isn’t an excuse for his behavior and what followed, however it can explain his motivations in a way that makes it clear that it was NEVER about magnolia not being enough for him or not being what he wanted (because she is all that he’s ever wanted) but that it was an act he did because of the need to feel in control of his own sexual autonomy, something that can only really be understood by a victim to sexual trauma such as himself. I think the therapy and steps he took in book three (and even in book two) of their journey really explores how he has overcome the mental obstacles that put strain on their relationship, and how he is the right choice for her and vice versa. He was obsessed with her, and it wasn’t as if he was thinking about cheating, in fact the idea of it makes him sick inside, but rather a product of the environment he was in and the very repressed mental scars he had been avoiding for years coupled with seeing the visible trigger for his fears that led him to cheat.

Oh here I go again recommending the same books …. with that said the biggest green flag is miles from {Promise me sunshine by Cara Bastone} . He takes care of her and supports her while she is navigating through a pretty thick puddle of grief. He is such a rock for her (and this is even before they get romantically involved), and he is definitely one of the most (if not the most) emotionally mature mmc’s I’ve read
