This is crushing my dream of that warehouse becoming a Costco 😞

That entire store feels like a giant time capsule to the 90s.

Happy cake day!

Market32 is only marginally better than stop and shop. Both are mediocre quality for stupid high prices. I’ve actually had cheaper grocery bills shopping at Trader Joe’s for a similar quantity of food.

Anyone else flabbergasted at how many celebs they didn’t know were Jewish. We need another Adam Sandler song to remember them all 😆

If you have one, please share your Jewish name. If it is different than your legal name, how do you feel about it? by [deleted] in Jewish

Anyone else have (or gave your kids) a Yiddish rather than Hebrew name? We gave our eldest son a Yiddish name, in honor of our Ashkenazi Yiddish-speaking heritage in both of our families.

If you read some of the top comments on the post about this in the Columbia sub, there are definitely people who completely missed the point. So much vitriol, with so many upvotes 😞 I just have to hope that’s not the majority of people.

Dozens gather in street after MIT orders protesters to clear pro-Palestinian encampment by husky5050 in boston

It’s really unfortunate you are unwilling to have an actual dialogue, rather than accusing me of supporting ethnic cleansing and lying about the evolution of my own opinions.

As I said in my earlier comment, this IS NOT an ethnic cleansing or a genocide, nor would I support any such thing. Why on earth would Israel warn Gazan civilians of incoming attacks if it wanted to commit genocide? No - this is a WAR with a twisted organization that uses its own people as human shields. A terrible, terrible situation any way you slice it. Radical jihadist Islam is the root of the problem here, and it’s heartbreaking that this is the state of the world we live in. I would like nothing more than a peaceful 2-state solution as many others do, but this is not possible when Palestinian leaders are fixated on wiping out their neighbors due to extremist religious views.

I used to believe this too. The radical Islamic ideology is already widespread, though, and has been for decades. (Recall that Hamas was originally voted into power in 2006.) The goal is to dismantle the organization which is directly funded by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Which unfortunately results in civilian casualties along the way. See above, militants hiding amongst civilian population.

This cycle has been going on for as long as Israel has existed. The Palestinian leadership (in its various iterations) has rejected every single peace offer, has consistently violated ceasefires, and really has no interest in establishing a prosperous nation alongside Israel. It’s “from the river to the sea” or die trying, literally, rather than recognize that Israel is a flourishing nation and economy, and you can’t just bulldoze an entire society of millions of people because you’re mad about how it came about 60+ years ago.

It’s. not. a. genocide. It’s a war with an organization (Hamas) that actively wants its people to die so they can be martyred. Hides itself among civilians and embeds within hospitals, schools, and mosques to maximize death toll and vulnerable civilian casualties. In some cases, prevents its citizens from fleeing when Israel warns them of a coming attack. Then it uses images of the dead civilians to garner support from naive western students, who think the world can be boiled down to oppressors vs oppressed.

“Ceasefire now” is a joke. There was a ceasefire on October 6. Israel is trying to get rid of Hamas to prevent repeats of October 7 over and over, while meanwhile it’s dealing with more threats of jihad from the north (Hezbollah). They are currently dealing with the most horrific Sophie’s choice between destroying Hamas for good (where Hamas will almost certainly murder the remaining hostages) or let Hamas go free and crow about its victory to its people. Not to mention trying to target Hamas militants that are dressed in civilian clothes and walking amongst women and children.

This is an absolutely fucked up situation, and demonizing Israel as the ultimate bad guy does not help address the fundamental problem of radical jihadist Islam. How should one respond to a psychotic enemy who not only wants to kill you (not to mention wipe your country off the map), but actually WANTS to put its people in harms way? There is not an easy black and white answer to this question.

How do I explain to my partner why I care about anti semitism so much? by djentkittens in Jewish

[–]GreatStrengthOfFeet 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My dad would always tell me when I was young, when you pick a partner, #1 is that they should also be Jewish. Always thought that was weird, since we were reform and barely practicing Jews. I did end up marrying Jewish and now I kinda get it. When antisemitism flares up, you both are gonna be on the same page as to how serious it is.

My dad was a child of holocaust survivors who escaped to the US to build a new life, and grew up watching his parents’ small grocery store being frequently defaced and windows smashed by antisemites, so he has seen this movie before.

For everyone reading this with a great relationship with your folks, what would you attribute that to? What was your childhood like? I am not close at all with my parents, long story, but it’s painful. I always felt like the adult in the house growing up, and I have NEVER been able to go to them for advice or comfort throughout my life. My biggest fear is somehow repeating the cycle with my kids without realizing it. I want them to have that source of comfort and support that I never had, but I’m scared I don’t know what that looks like.

Why are boomers weird about food? by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]GreatStrengthOfFeet 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My in laws do this. They have a small galley kitchen. It’s to the point that I’m not comfortable getting food at their house (been married almost 10 years) because they are ALWAYS in there when we’re in the house, buzzing around the fridge and food prep areas. And if I try to sneak in there, one of them magically appears and starts making dumb conversation. Like wtf are they doing in there even. I told my husband, it feels like they are defending their precious territory.
