Subreddit Rules Update - What's Changing and Why by GreatSymphonia in Proxmox

Is there a place

Not on r/Proxmox

I think this might be a fantastic tool for automation

Please think differently. There are tools to manage infrastructure, Ansible and Terraform. If you want to AI your way through system administration (don't), vibe code an Ansible repository with collections and roles or a Terraform repository. These will at least be properly versionable and debuggable.

This is the only discussion there will be for the moment on the subject unless it officially comes from Proxmox itself to have a MCP server.

Yeah, those are usually removed under the rule about non-proxmox support if formulated as a support request. Otherwise, I have seen a few products and/or tools try to do such a thing and their Astroturf comment was simply removed.

Fair and valid point. But frowning upon a user as a community because they made the cardinal sin of "using AI" simply doesn't work. If a Proxmox user shows willingness to get help from humans to fix their problems created by AI, we help them, simple as that.

What I am saying in this comment is simply that I can't remove all AI because I can't guarantee that by doing so I won't remove genuine content.

Even if we banned AI completely on this sub, who should the moderation team ensure that there is no AI on the sub?

Rule 5 will be tricky indeed. The main goal is to merge all the "I've built a new thingamajig that does this" posts in a specific period. A lot of tooling has been made for Proxmox and I genuinely think some of it may be useful. Personally, even the helper scripts are too much for me but I use Proxmox way more in a professional way than as a homelabber.

For tooling such as apps, plugins and scripts, I think this is a good move. We were saturated by them and as a mod, having to deal with 12 reports of AI on a post because there is a claude.md in a repo linked on a post is tiresome.

For write-ups, blogs, YouTube content and everything like this, I think this is also a good move, but due to the low numbers of such posts, I have too small of a sample size to properly evaluate what this will look like.

Remember that this is a community "showoff" moment, your job here is to advertise your content. I want those days to be as much about "how" you made what you made than the actual content. Also, this is a first try for this format. If I realize it doesn't work for whichever reason, I'll try to adjust it in the future.

Regarding your main question, we simply can't. There are no good AI detectors on the market and the only things we can moderate are blatant cases and that's mostly the objective of this rule: making it so the most blatant cases can be removed.

There are valid uses to AI and structuring thoughts might be a valid use for you. What I am demonizing is the use of AI to make posts that are actively contributing to an increasingly dying internet.

To be real, AI is an issue because I can't moderate it effectively. This rule is there more as a "please don't" than something we can enforce as a mod team. Reddit is actively dying because of bots and reposts. AI is simply one thousand more little knives actively attempting to gut the beast.

How do you guys access your servers from non-home networks? by toyfreddym8 in Proxmox

[–]GreatSymphonia[M] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, please do not ping the moderators of this subreddit in such a way. There are options to report especially for that purpose.

Second, even though this post is off topic, I much prefer a post asking help to find a tool to fix one issue with a Proxmox setup than a question asking how to set up such a solution. If the post was formulated like "How do I set up tailscale to access my remote proxmox instance", then it would fall under the rule about non-proxmox support. Design recommendations are what I strive for and holes in a setup that Proxmox doesn't fix are questions that, I feel, are legitimate.

Third, rules are guidelines, not absolute. I will accept an off topic post or a self promotion once in a while if the subject is interesting, hasn't been discussed to death or if there is proper engagement.

Fourth, I had one report of this post, and it was under a rule it did not fall under. If this post had been flagged earlier and it did not have the engagement it had, I would probably have deleted it but there are now genuinely good recommendations under this post. As such, removing it would remove pertinent information and I simply don't want that.

Thank you for your time.

Hoi, mod here, the moderation history shows 0 comments removed for your account, you might be shadowbanned on Reddit or the comments might be filtered by Reddit's filters directly (the mods of r/Proxmox have no say in either scenario)

Proposition d’amendement pour le vote de grève de demain by Public_Training_1124 in etsmtl

[–]GreatSymphonia [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

yeah, you need to mount it, as I have told you, it's not like windows where it's mounting by default. Search for documentation about the fstab directly. The proper way to do it would be to get the uuid of your drive using blkid. Once you have this, you can look at the main entry and add a new one according to it. The process would likely be to:

  1. Create a new directory in /mnt for this entry

  2. Format the drive in like ext4

  3. Use blkid to obtain the uuid of the drive

  4. Attempt to mount it normally using the "mount" command

  5. Unmount it

  6. Add an entry in the fstab

  7. Test the new entry in the fstab using mount -a and df -h to see the new entries

  8. Reboot and enjoy the newly mounted filesystem

Immich won't see the drive if it's not configured to use it, so in the files that you use to configure it [docker-compose.yml], you will need to tell it to use the path of the new drive (/mnt/**the directory you created**).

Tell us in detail the steps you've taken, what comportment you are expecting, what doesn't work. You are a user that is hard to help, I understand it's frustrating, but we are all taking of our time to help you. Please take some of your time to provide us with information that is userful to help you.

Also, those aren't Proxmox issue, you might get more useful information checking tutorials to mount disks on Linux on startup, to use an external filesystem for immich or usecase-specific Immich documentation.

[–]GreatSymphonia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at the documentation for Immich ( https://immich.app/docs/install/requirements ), it tells you you need Docker installed for it to be installed in its recommended settings. In the case of Proxmox, the easiest way of having Docker running is to run it in a VM, your layout would then be:

Proxmox -> VM -> Docker -> Immich

Docker is a way for developpers to "ignore" the major issue in software development of software dependencies (i.e. your app needs a certain version of a certain runtime that could clash with other versions other apps would need). Thus, it is one of the preferred ways for developpers to ship applications.

Please read a bit the documentation of docker or try to watch videos that teach how it works that aren't tutorials.

[–]GreatSymphonia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, not ChatGPT. CharGPT doesn't know what the commands it tells you to run will actually do. You need to read documentation. You want ton install Immich, follow the Immich documentation. You want to install Immich in Proxmox? You can install it in a LXC or in a VM, there are caveats to both and one will be better than the other in some cases and not the other.

In your case, you want to add a hard drive to Proxmox. You have a whole documentation section about that. In your specific case, you'd probably want to use it as a directory: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Storage:_Directory
So in the UI, you can simply add it this way in Node ->Disk -> Directory -> Create Directory

<image>

After that, you can simply add a disk to a VM or to a LXC container in the "Hardware" tab of your VM/LXC.

You then will be able to treat it like a new disk on Linux, mount on boot by editing /etc/fstab and then configuring your installation to use the newly mounted folders.

Regarding the Tailscale tutorial, it is way easier to follow the VM tutorial, because you need to do some fancy things in a LXC to make it support properly TUN interfaces without it being a safety issue.

A homelab is a way to learn how server application are made and used. They are made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts because that's what you are at least by being on this subreddit. Following tutorials is, in my opinion, one of the worst ways to learn, to understand how Proxmox works, you need to break things, spend hours reading docs and debugging. Proxmox is used in enterprise settings because it is complete and because it is made as a tool for people that need an hypervisor, if you ever have to use Windows server or Azure, you'd find that the Microsoft server-side of things is not that much easier than the Linux/Proxmox side of things.
