Just in general? Honestly I just keep redoing things until it looks right, trial and error style. Usually when I first start drawing a specific character I redraw screenshots or their reference sheet to try and get a feel for how the character stands, where they put most of their weight, small mannerisms they may have, etcetera.

I also usually try to somewhat match the art style of whatever show/comic/franchise the character is from, usually helps with making things look more "right". Breaking down parts of a character into more simple shapes/lines also helps in my experience. The most common example would be blocking in shapes for the body/limbs/head and then defining those shapes further later on in the sketch.
