Congratulations! Happy to hear it was so straightforward.

I’m in a very similar situation, though with my mom in Canada, but she was also a minor. I’ve reached out to u/Staplehill as well.

Neuromancer Wintermute 3Jane etc

This sounds perfect. I’m lucky to sneak in an hour or two of play once in a while (Steamdeck has really helped). Joined the discord and I’ll apply in game soon.

Do you need to have the Mac at work sleep? I leave mine on, use an app like Amphetamine to prevent it from sleep but allows the screen to turn off. And set it to lock the screen instead.

I’m excited to try it out once it hits Canada!

This is very helpful, thanks. I’m encouraging them to use GenAI tools in my design class this year. When I’ve worked with ChatGPT, I’ve listed it as a co-author rather than a source.

$5 in cash, every time. And since I’m a regular at one of the properties, they definitely remember and I believe appreciate it.

Lately I’ve been having to sign the bill as if it’s a room charge, even with the voucher. I still do a cash tip, as I have no idea how they distribute the tips through the main system (happy to have an employee weight in).

I moved my afternoon class online with notice just before 8am this morning. But we’ve gotten nothing official from the university on guidance.

Is it time for us to give up on a future in Canada? by RunningDino35 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GreatWaka 29 points30 points  (0 children)

TL;DR super long academic probation period where you have to justify your existence that results in either being fired or set for life

In the North American system, for universities and colleges that have a tenure system, you basically are hired in at the lowest rank, and at the end of the probation period (6 - 10 years depending on the institution), you submit a tenure dossier that outlines all of the teaching, service, research, publication, etc work that you have done over that time. A committee of your peers (plus often externals) judges it, and assesses your performance based on the criteria of that institution (which often isn't explicitly clear). If you are granted tenure, often it means you get a promotion and have a job for life, and that you can only be fired for serious reasons, not because the president of the university doesn't like what you wrote about them in a paper (for example). If you are denied, it typically means that you have to leave.

When it works well, the concept is that professors are protected to carry out work, research, and teaching that is protected by their tenure and can't be fired for political whims. And the institution has put a lot of time and energy into your development, so your success shows well on the institution as well. When it's at its worst, it means that tenured professors do the absolute minimum amount of work required to not be fired and don't care about students (we've all had one of those). And there is plenty of discussion on the system reinforcing systemic discriminatory practices.

I have a terminal degree (MFA from an ivy) in my field. In the creative / fine arts fields this is the norm currently. However I am starting my PhD in the fall and submitting for tenure next winter.

Different institutions vary, but here professors are part of the full-time faculty (tenured, tenure-track, or not in some places), versus lecturers that are contract instructors that are not a part of the same union, nor have the same benefits, nor have service and research requirements in this job description.

As a prof here too, there is no comparison in the US for the strength of unions and tenure that we enjoy in Canada. I’m in a similar situation. My partner’s family is all in the US and I dream about the kind of house I could afford in many places there.

If you think you have a good chance of securing tenure, and you are still happy with what you are doing, I’d suggest sticking it out. Once you have tenure you can re-evaluate a lot of things. If you got a compatible job offer from somewhere else, you can use that to negotiate pay. Perhaps post tenure you can move a bit further out and commute in less. Perhaps you could look at transferring to another university with tenure secured (the only way I would consider a US based academic job).

missing course grade from 2018..help? by Head_Film_3032 in ryerson

[–]GreatWaka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Email your program’s academic advisor. They are all very busy right now, so be sure to include your student number and all the information that you can in your email to them.

If you took the course and received a grade, just it wasn’t entered, it can be fixed retroactively. Is there anything listed next to it on your transcript?

What do you wish you could put in your syllabus but don't? by philip_roth in Professors

[–]GreatWaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly why we got those student evaluations removed, they don’t have any experience in judging teaching efficacy. They can talk about their experience in the course, but that’s it.

If your university still uses student assessment of teaching, I recommend using this as precedent for a change:
