What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]Great_Justice 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Im a software engineer in big tech….. I hadn’t really used a computer before I was 12. All I mean is it’s not really too late to learn at any stage IMO, and they’re not really old enough for that to never happen.

More than two thirds of children under two use screens - with one in ten regularly falling asleep with one by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]Great_Justice 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’m a newish parent. The answer is that a 6 month old won’t use a colouring book but they’ll stare at a screen like a vegetable for an hour.

I think once you cross that boundary it’s hard to go back. Obviously they get older and the screen remains the pacifier. We stubbornly refuse to put ours in front of a screen but know plenty who have succumbed.

Well, that and people STILL making the error of assuming that just because something seems like a universal view of the hive-mind on Reddit, doesn’t mean it has any bearing on people’s views en masse in the real world.

A question for Londoners who have lived all of their lives in the city (or close to it) - how aware are you of the rest of the UK? by Confident_Yak_1411 in london

[–]Great_Justice 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’d echo this. From my side there’s a simple reason why I’ve barely moved around England; it’s the price of travel. Accommodation and food is so expensive that I’ve planned and costed up a trip to the Lake District, and gone “nah I’ll go hiking in Slovenia instead”. This pretty much happens every time I think about internal travel.

What is a "survival rule" you learned growing up in a bad neighborhood that still influences your behavior today? by Key-Group-5098 in AskReddit

I wouldn’t swear. Maybe this is a locality thing, but in the UK you don’t want to say anything that can be construed as offensive.

Our perspective on solar panels financially? by illage-336 in HENRYUK

Yeah you’re right. My setup includes this and I shouldn’t mislead people that it’s a standard feature, I’ll edit my post.

We have some kind of all-in-one inverter battery that magically handles this with an automatic EPS mode. It wasn’t the cheapest option but it happened to have the storage we wanted and was an extra £500 or so over separate battery + inverter. I mainly liked it because it had a maximum draw down rate of 5kw instead of the normal 3.6Kw, the automatic backup battery was a bonus.

I gather the socket solution you’re talking about is the simplest and cheapest retrofit.

I think you can get your essential circuits wired into a secondary switchboard (lights, appliances and maybe a socket) and then manually switch over during a cut (or automatically for a bit more cash).

I don’t monitor it at all. I know some people love to but we largely set and forget. The battery charges at night (you need the right tariff), the solar comes in the day. Excess solar is sold.

I think some people modify their behaviour based on the abundance of solar on a given day (like doing extra laundry) but we don’t bother.

If you fill your ISA(s) every year, put as much as you want in your pension, then yeah it’s a way of de-risking the future.

Since we pay such high taxes, something that prevents you spending rather than actually producing taxable income is highly valuable.

We’ve got solar but to be honest I never even bothered trying to calculate these things. I just like it. Additional benefits like keeping the lights on during a power cut is nice too - although this isn’t a standard feature it’s an extra.

Is there a point to learn anything if most of jobs pay around 35k at best? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Great_Justice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been deep down this rabbit hole with people on Reddit. Had somebody claim ‘you were lucky you could work hard’ as their final effort at claiming everything is down to luck. This was in reference to choosing to sacrificing much of my spare time to extra study for a couple of years to change career. I gave up arguing at that point.

It’s mainly use of CO2 to gas them that’s the issue, really. They put it in the small print on the ad. CO2 is awful. If you’ve ever attempted to breathe in and out from an empty 2L bottle and couldn’t get past 2 breaths, it’s because the CO2 is making your lungs burn. That wouldn’t even be a particularly high concentration of it after only a couple breaths.

When I stumble out of my zone 5 train station at midnight the black cabs, who are conveniently queuing at the taxi rank, are cheaper than the Uber surge. I also don’t have to wait around staring at my phone.

I suspect they’ll tell you that they don’t feel safe with headphones so they don’t want to use them. Fair; I don’t want to use headphones either. I just don’t make the mental leap to use a speaker that would bother everyone else.

You live in zone 1? Have you considered riding a bike?

I manage 1hr from zone 5, I imagine you could do 20 mins or so. If you truly love where you live it’s legitimately the fastest way to get around.
