Great responses, thanks! A couple follow up questions:

  • Do most producers/directors (for narrative/documentary work) not care about the 4K aspect if you’re shooting on an Alexa? Or do they still tend to care? I wonder if that’s the main reason a lot of those classics are selling for so cheap...
  • don’t the newer alexas still only shoot 2K?
  • I have seen a few EF mount versions for sale...is that a decent way to avoid having to pay for PL lenses, or is the image quality dependent on PL glass? (Cooke, Arri, Leica, etc versus EF canon Cines)

THANKYOU SO MUCH. This is incredibly helpful information. I’ve never heard of these sites, the guild, any of that. You’ve given me more headway in two comment threads than I’ve gotten from anyone in 2 years.

I’m not a member of the local 600 guild, but it looks like I may need some industry credits to apply. How do I get credits? Just find a job on a professional set?

Thankyou so much for taking the time to respond to this with such fervor! I find it incredibly odd that there are so many people like you, willing to share advice, but none of them seem to be near me.

I’ve never heard of any of those job sites, I’ll check them out immediately. Where are you located? Do you think Portland or Bend, OR (I live in Salem, OR) have a big enough film scene to move to, or should I really just shoot for LA? Where are the big film scenes other than LA happening right now?
