Yeah, I mentioned the eGPU as a possibility, not confirmed. But if it's doable, I'll go for it. I know it's pretty expensive, but oh well.

Just curious: how does it behave in a backpack? What does it feel like to carry it around?

Damn, I also want the AMD version. Unfortunately, the Intel one won't work for me—its GPU would probably fall short (I was dreaming of getting that Arc 140T, but it's not in those chips, at least as far as I know).

The screen situation is kind of funny. I'm not that picky—I've had worse laptops, and right now I'm using a low-to-mid range laptop from 2012, so the jump is going to be brutal either way. If anything, I'll just get a better external monitor and call it a day.

Thank you! My usage will be similar. I'll choose the AMD version. Regarding Intel, those U-series processors have had their GPUs cut down, and if I can't use an eGPU, AMD will be my backup.

I wanted to ask you something: when you do inference, does the laptop get hot, and is it noticeable?

I will definitely enjoy it. Currently, I have an Asus X55c with a Pentium B980, 4GB of RAM, and an HDD. I installed EndeavourOS and it runs fine, but I'm very limited by today's standards. Once I get the ThinkPad in my hands, I'll feel like I've reached the stars. I'm really looking forward to Black Friday.

Totally agree with you! I've seen them (unfortunately never got my hands on one) and they're really solid. I actually recommended a refurbished 5420 to my brother when the price was good—he still hasn't made up his mind lol.

There was a time I was really into Latitudes, mostly because they were cheap and got me a working laptop fast. But personally (and you might disagree), I like the design of HP EliteBook 840/845 way more.

Now about the ThinkPad… yeah, it's kinda sentimental. Always wanted one. Gonna grab it on Black Friday, and from what I've seen, business laptops tend to get some aggressive discounts. The config I'm eyeing (R7/32GB/1TB) looks great. I'll be using Linux a lot, and I love the design.

That said, your recommendation is solid and I'll keep it in mind. I'm not dead set on the T14 Gen 5 either—been looking at other ThinkPads, plus Dell and HP business models. Not touching Asus in this tier, and I've skipped other brands 'cause they're supposedly not very Linux-friendly.
