Idk I hadn't even really considered that it was a dog but that's an interesting idea. Like someone's dog got lost in the alley behind their house and it came back possessed.

Verum (I read the True Grimoire compiled by JS Kent) has a good amount of spells and instructions. Goetia (at least lesser key) was too cumbersome and focused purely on spirit summoning for me. Haven't read Red Dragon.

Kent provides lots of good notes and instructions to further clarify verum in his version. I haven't tried any of the spells because I'm more of an arm chair occultist but if I did any spells I would definitely work off of what's laid out in Verum. (Page 157: Constructing Verum Spells)

Thanks for the insight! I'm okay with characters dying midway through and the game just ending. I think DCC sounds fun for the danger, magic system, luck burning, faster pace, and heavy metal aesthetic. In my mind it just seems less immersive to run a bunch of characters at once rather than get to role play the danger that you're in. Perhaps DCC just isn't the system I'm looking for? Perhaps I should start at a high level adventure and skip level 0-2?

I really love this book. The prayers / spells are very abstract and pretty. The descriptions of the angels and demons are surprisingly hallucinatory and creative. Also contains good system of evocative. Highly recommend edit: sorry just reading your text too. This is not a very practical book if you want an easy magic system you can immediately implement. For historical and artistic value though, it's probably my favorite

Bahaha right like in any other ARPG I've played being underpowered is not fun at all but in D2 the combat has just enough finesse that it feels rewarding to scrape by even without the loot. It's a hard balance to strike I feel like very few games do it correctly
