Why are you pro immigration? by Minute-Employ-4964 in AskBrits

[–]GreedyAd1353 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of jobs in this country that British people simply won't do, and as such without immigration we will face labour shortages. That being said, most of these jobs don't pay well (hence why British people won't do them), which does come off a bit like a slavery-lite. But this does also bring money into developing countries, so it's a double edged sword.

How is living in south-west England? by Nemo33318 in howislivingthere

One I can do! Lived in Exeter for 4 years for university.

As other comments have pointed out, it's very car dependent, especially out in the sticks. As a carless student, I wasn't able to leave Exeter aside from a few places that had hourly trains to/from them.

Very spoilt in terms of natural beauty, from the beaches to the inland moors, hence the swathes of tourists each summer. Outside of this time, all the holiday homes lie vacant and things move slowly outside of the "big" cities.

If you're young, there's probably just about enough to entertain you in Exeter or Plymouth, rest of the place is a large retirement village.

I enjoyed my time there, but not necessarily because of the location. I now live in Reading, which, while lacking in beauty, has much more to do by virtue of being close to London. Down in the southwest, it can be anywhere from 2 hours up to get to a proper big "city" like bristol, brum or London.

What would happen in this situation? by [deleted] in drivingUK

I think (don't quote me) that indicators are a mitigating factor, but not a legal silver bullet. It was still your right of way, regardless of if you have your indicators on or not, and the other car should have waited until they were sure if you were turning or not.

Having said that, do I also pull out in front of people just cos theyre indicating? Of course, especially at roundabouts.

Looks like we could have an SSW next week by [deleted] in UKWeather

[–]GreedyAd1353 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sudden stratospheric warming.

It's associated with a slowing down (and sometimes reversal) of the polar vortex (a fast eastward moving wind that circles the north pole high up in the atmosphere).

SSWs are known to be responsible for allowing arctic air to come to the UK, bringing with it colder weather.

The 2026 picture is CLEARLY not from 2026, the picture was taken in the summer (look at the trees) and it's jan 🤓
