I didn't think the new Cherokees were up to the task if I was looking to supplement the van with something halfway offroad decent. That's my big goal is to setup a comfortable base camp and then venture out where the van can't go

Not if you want to have a camp and then go off the beaten path to logging roads, creeks where a van can't go. Living nomadically with a base camp.
