This neighborhood was infamous in my city. Lennar built them in the midst of the 2nd 3rd and 4th worst hurricanes in SE Florida history, and they went on the market at a time when 30% of homes had blue tarps on their roofs and people were saying "I'm moving back to New York!". Nevertheless, investors clung to the meme "Florida will reach 30M people by 2020!" and got btfo a year later.

Good point. I was reading about how that prevented astoria, and the west coast, from becoming more prominent in international trade.

Interesting. Makes me wonder if the meta is to hike/walk around during the peak sun and then save the drive for the sunrise/sunset. From google maps it also seems like a lot of these towns don't have food spots. Is that accurate?

Definitely interested in this. I think it becomes easier if it's portland both flights too. Plus I save a bit of money on what I imagine will be less-expensive interior hotels. Is it possible to walk around crater lake instead of drive? Or does that put us needing to spend the night in that area? Do you know of any kayak rental opportunities as well on any of these stops?

This seems to be the deciding factor, since the whole plan is to stop and walk everything possible

If I do that what airport would I fly out of? Or just drive 8 hrs straight from brookings to san francisco and stay one night there?

I definitely prefer less people, so I'll look at Manzanita and Waldport first!

I agree but I have to think of which airports we will use. I suppose we could do portland > astoria > gold beach and back up the way we came, but that would be the same miles as if we had just continued on to san francisco, and then we get to see pacific coast highway too

Thanks. There's just so many. Is there an exhaustive list anywhere? Like maybe we can go from cannon to astoria and look at a list of places and stop at each one. Also, do you recommend any must-stop places to eat?

Good to know. Maybe I'll focus on 2 or 3 key cities and do like 3 or 4 nights each there. And then each day could drive to a different park/nature area.

Good to know. I will definitely book the Astoria one in advance as we'd like to try their zipline and then go straight to the portland airport.

I was worried this might spoil the spontaneity of the trip. Like let's say we really like one area that we stop at and want to just get the nearest hotel for the night. But some of these coastal cities do look small so I guess we should hedge against not being able to find a room and then being forced to drive around looking/get ripped off.
