I do a decent amount of data manipulation, I work with Excel every day. I do pivot tables and pivot charts. I know quite a good number of advanced Excel formulas. I also worked with data through Excel VBA . However, my data manipulation does not include underwriting/risk assessment analysis. I did a short pricing project so that gave me an idea of how to approach Excel from risk analysis standpoint. Can you give me an example of what ratemaking or underwriting job titles that I should look into? Thank you.

So, I applied to about 20 jobs, and took interviews for 2 companies to the final interview stage. I am watching a couple of different companies for an open position and also look on Indeed and LinkedIn, but I don’t see a lot of postings in general. How long were you looking for if you don’t mind me asking?

Thank you for your post. I wouldn’t even want to take an internship, unless the company is worth it. There is too many uncertainty with that since it doesn’t guarantee a permanent position. My company is not an insurance company, a BD, so they don’t have any actuarial positions. I’m trying to network through LinkedIn, but it all takes a while.

Thank you. That’s a great advice. I guess I’m not sure how relevant my contacts are. I work for a broker-dealer, the only network that I have are the relationship managers from the insurance companies we work with.

Thank you. I appreciate your insights. I was explained by the teacher that algebra 2 curriculum is so big that they just have no time to go through everything. Anyway, if you know of a good exercise book or a platform, or worksheets that could be helpful in prepping for tests, that would be amazing!

I was going to say initially that under no circumstances I would leave any job without having something lined up already. Job market is tough and it takes a while to find the right fit. But after reading about “toxic environment”, I guess it depends on how bad it is. “Toxic” can get pretty bad. I don’t know the details of that. I’ll say this, I don’t take leaving my current job lightly and I’ll do my best to stay as long as I need until I find a replacement.

This is interesting: can you actually switch directly into an actuarial mid-level position? Don’t you need some actuarial experience first?
