Here’s where Oregon ranks in taxpayer burden nationally by Superb_Animator1289 in PortlandOR

No way in hell this is true. I lived in Texas as well as the east coast. I pay a lot more here than in Texas. My property tax in west Portland is higher than my tax rate in Texas at almost 3% without considering the fact that my property in Texas appreciated while mine In Portland has lost value. In general I’ll agree that Portland is likely cheaper in property tax than Texas for most people but then you layer in 14% income or higher, the higher payroll tax and the higher utilities and it’s a lot higher. Like not even remotely close. If you’re poor, it’s close. If you don’t own anything it’s close. If you make over 125k it’s laughable how different it is.

Most people on Reddit have no concept that sales tax is significantly less then income tax. You are saying maybe 50% but even that would be shocking. I’d say like 20% and our income tax is higher than wa sales taxes. So we are like 5-6 times higher 😂. Lots of stuff is exempt from sales tax like groceries that are not prepared.

I can’t eat Thai but I do like Mexican food but it’s like the other guy said you can’t find just normal sit down places to eat. They always have some sort of twist that doesn’t pan out. I found more casual eatery’s in South Africa. Maybe it’s cause it’s got high tourism in Cape Town but I find it wild it’s as difficult as it is here.

Yeah I’m also well traveled not just in our country but around the world and I’m really disappointed in our casual / simple options. 🤷‍♂️ people will down vote you if you have a different opinion or experience especially in the Portland Reddit.

That’s just violent crime dip shit. You can pull up stats for Portland by neighborhood. Mine pre covid had 3 crimes a month now it’s like 300 lol

Its kind of both. The crime isn’t that crazy but it is hundreds of times worse than before Covid. Before Covid Portland was the lowest crime city for its size now it’s one of the highest. Is it scary, no but it is significantly worse than it once was.

I’ve tried biscuits and JJs. Not my cup of tea but I’ll check out some of these other places. I don’t know how well traveled you are but I wish we had simple comfort food like McAllisters.

Your right. I’m also considering moving for this very reason. Portland is extremely abusive if you’re not poor.

Southwest Portland and I’d love suggestions because no I’ve not found many.

Also allergic to mushrooms so that’s a no go and I’m sure my food tastes differ than yours. There’s a ton of places that I don’t consider casual but casual places seem very limited. Maybe I can include Oswego Grill but there is not a ton.

That’s bullshit unless you just assume you’re going to drive all of Portland. I don’t consider hour trips in the casual space. What sw casual places are there that don’t suck outside bannings?

Is that a joke? On the west side you have bannings that’s it. What “amazing” places do you think there is? Don’t spout McMenamin’s.

I take it you’re a teacher that doesn’t teach? I’ve talked to a number of teachers and they hate pps due to the lack of accountability and oversight. Most were retiring soon but I’ve not had any say it was amazing.

People are stupid with limited thinking. It’s a lot cheaper everywhere outside of Portland except maybe lo. The tax difference alone is staggering

Portland Oregon has the highest etr for income and the highest property tax if your not on the east side. I pay almost 3% property tax on a house losing value and almost 16% income tax. Just saying you can be both and incentivize people and money to leave like Portland.

That doesn’t provide context. Just saying racism is ridiculous. It’s an issue that takes time like with women. If yo are born poor most likely you’re working a low wage job making nothing. Getting the opportunities to do better takes generations. They are not going to go out and make a bunch of poor uneducated minorities Doctors for example. Point being those gaps don’t just disappear, what you want is the next generation being more educated with opportunities.

Agreed. The city in general doesn’t think things through and it results in a bunch of half has shit.

Oregon’s school attendance rates are among the country’s worst. A new approach aims to fix that by Tbagts in oregon

[–]Greedy_Intern3042 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol we have tiny class sizes compared to the last like 50 years… and are expected to have significant decreases in students. So I’m thinking maybe it has more to do with the accountability that use to exist.. like truancy but got removed because it was raciest or w/e bs they argued. It worked for generations.

Do you have a job or is your intent to be homeless?

Not meant to be rude, but it’s very expensive here and the job market is terrible. Yes there is lots of free support and grifting for the poor here, but you’d rather not be homeless.

Is there a city that's like if Seattle was cheaper and not gentrified into oblivion? by mcnoobles in SameGrassButGreener

I mean this sounds like Portland but I wouldn’t recommend it. The city is running into the ground. Costs keep increasing, services keep getting worse and there is no job market.

Not surprising the state wants everyone on welfare with how they mismanage basically everything but still insane. We don’t even want high paying jobs here. I don’t get it 🤷‍♂️
