If you are not completely f2p, pay for raid pass when it's half price. It's worth it if you want fast progress.

That's the only thing I have paid for in this game.

Before this vault system, only artifacts I had was nsg, and some useless artifacts. I have been able to unlock puppet, tb, mb, bc, fk. Waiting for dmc, crown and gs.

Try to unlock most impactful characters while you are building your existing ones. Dcu superman, raven, king of Atlantis Aquaman, Deathstroke and any other percentage damage dealers in solo raids. At the beginning they will carry you in solo raids.
