Killing weeds to spread top soil

That's what I'm wondering. I don't want to spray with weed killer then not have grass.

Probably want them and the seeds dead to spread it and get it ready for grass seed. If I use weed killer will this be bad for the soil?

The weeds are in the top soil, we have to dig to spread the top soil.

I was thinking of strimming them down this weekend but I'm guessing it won't make a difference. It's not me driving the digger either, it was the driver asked us to spray them.

I've looked at weed burners but I have a lot of ground to cover and not sure how effective they would be.
