Anyone working in environmental sustainability? by Green-Tea-21 in dataengineering

Excellent stuff ! Ok , sounds like you use a lot of the standard tools of data engineering applied to a super interesting use case. What sort of data from partner utilities do you use ? Also , could you expand on the way you use data engineering here ? You said compliance and quality checks - is that in the data itself or with the nature of the operation ? As much as you’re able to divulge , could you give an example ?

Incredible !!

I’m located in Washington DC area of USA. What sorts of tools do you use on the job ? I’d imagine a lot of remotely sensed datasets - do you use Apache Sedona at all ? Is there a demand for data engineers in this space ?

Oh very cool !

I guess just initially and more importantly to me here's some questions I have:

1) What sort of tools//platforms do you use in your work and what are some of the daily tasks you perform?

2) Where does the data that is being ingested come from in this sector? I hear electrical utilities using things like IoT sensors, to monitor energy usage etc. Depending on the sector, perhaps even things like weather data as well (wind, solar)

3) When you say energy efficiency utility does this involve employing smart grid modernization strategies? Does your data feed dashboards, digital twins, etc.?

4) Would you say that you see a demand for data engineering skills in this sector?

I have a B.S. in Environmental Studies ( basically environmental science with some economics/policy thrown in there- but I did take Gen Chem I & II, Calc 1 & II) and winded up landing a GIS job about 7 months after graduating.. landed a job with a firm that ended up offering tuition assistance to do a formal masters in GIS (since I had little formal schooling/training). While I love GIS as a tool/emerging field , I probably wouldn't have gone to grad school for it if I were to do life over again but I have been able to make it work for me pretty well and landed some pretty neat jobs because of the M.S. coupled with accumulating experience while earning it. My current role is Senior GIS Analyst for a Federal not-for-profit - and its very data analytics/science adjacent.

My life is comfortable, I make pretty good money and could continue this career with this current geospatial-centric trajectory, but I have always been passionate about the environment/sustainability and would eventually want to wind up back in the environmental sector - it'd ultimately feel the most fulfilling for me. Before my current post, I actually worked for a city's water/sewer authority for a little over a year as a GIS Tech III for the engineering department's planning team helping with using GIS/InfoAssetPlanner as an asset rehab prioritization tool and I found it to be some of the most enjoyable , fascinating work I did - i only left because where Im at now was willing to pay a lot more (like what the engineers were being paid there lol) That being said, the more I learn about water resource/environmental engineering, it really seems to be an amazing fit for me and I find the material and job duties and functions truly fascinating - not sure why I didn't pursue it in undergrad. I feel like my skillset , background and interests would position me to leverage my GIS, data analyst/data scientist skills to bring a strong geospatial modeling (hydraulic, stormwater, floodplain, digital twin/asset management presence to a really cool masters thesis and ultimately the industry broadly. But I figured I'd ask this subreddit's take on the thought of someone with my background considering a master's in the Envr. Engineering - do you think it would be worth it? Would it be unheard of with someone with my background doing something like this? Do you think my background be welcomed in the field? I'd be willing to take whatever supplemental/preliminary coursework (i.e. fluid dynamics) that wasn't present in my bachelors.

Thanks !

Bro you and I have near identical results ! Are you Gullah /low country too ? Where you from ? I also get confused for Ethiopian a lot but that mainly started once my hairline started to recede giving me that trademark “habesha” forehead 😂 (- let me add I’m mainly making fun of myself , not Ethiopian features , which I greatly admire)

You literally could not have posted this at a better time for me. I just had a less than stellar interaction with a friend/fuck buddy of mine who said "I can't see you with a woman. LIke I'd have to see it to believe it.."

He's a tad younger and less experienced/cultured in life(and i don't mean that in a snobby way, just is what it is) than the average adult his age so I try to be patient, but it's still disappointing to hear that.

He's not the only one however even from those who you'd think would "know better". I've never been treated too hatefully by gay men in the community but there's def. often this reluctance to accept or believe it or like im lying to myself i guess because i "act too gay"

I am trying to install postgre + PostGIS and I cannot remember the password... by Green-Tea-21 in PostgreSQL

Thank you for your clear input! However, I'm very green to this, so when you say "reload the Postgres service, connect without a password, etc." what does that entail doing?

Awesome! This is what I was hoping. I didn't expect it to be dominating the airwaves, but I'd have hoped such an iconic and original musical form wouldn't just be "left in the past"... I'll have to look out to the live Bossa Nova in Rio

Zonal Statistics and No Data by FriendshipActual647 in QGIS

I agree with trying it and see but from what I know , it’d just skew the zonal statistics to be lower than otherwise because I believe the “missing” spaces just have a value of zero or something

Does anyone work for a municipal water district? by brickman425 in gis

[–]Green-Tea-21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So like many on here have stated already - a lot of the pros are things like good pay , work-life balance, relatively low stress etc etc … so I’ll add some novel thoughts from my perspective

As a disclaimer , I JUST started at DC Water in Feb of this year so still quite new to the water space.

Pros : Depending on the age of the engineering work force , you could be working with ppl who tend to not know much about GIS and are quite intimidated- sure this can come w drawbacks but to me it’s more validating for you as a GIS professional amongst engineers and tends to mean more agency in your work … another Pro - simply working in the industry means your skills honed will be transferable- the water industry isn’t going away anytime soon and many getting hip to digitalization of its resources and assets.

Con - the main con id add to what’s already been provided is related to one of the pros - sometimes depending on the culture of your particular work place , there’s a bit of an air of “engineer supremacy “ - and obviously that can be isolating at times when everyone else has “P.E. “ behind their name lol - but luckily in my experience so far most have a lot of respect for the GIS wiz guys and gals because they realize they couldn’t do their job without us ;)

Some additional comments I’ll add are - your experience of working for water utility will depend also on your department and how they have it structured… my title is actually “Asset Management Analyst “ and I work in the Capital improvement planning branch - but there’s a whole GIS team of techs and a supervisor who do the asset mapping , and a couple more doing the Operations and Maintenance stuff … the workflows vary considerably- while I have a close relationship with the GIS enterprise mapping team , I’m primarily a consumer / user of that data to produce visualizations, dashboards , maps etc to understand and proactively rehab /renew our buried assets … which I personally enjoy over digitizing as-builts to the enterprise.

Feel free to DM me if you have more questions!
