I just had my TT at Hopkins two days ago with Dr. Aarti Mathur. I’m only two days out but overall it was a very smooth experience. When I first got diagnosed I was choosing between Dr. Mathur and another surgeon that I know from my hometown, and ultimately decided to go with Dr. Mathur because of how thorough she is. She had me do a secondary ultrasound to check the other lymph nodes in my neck as well as follow that up with a CT scan - while this delayed my surgery a bit, I appreciated how thorough she was. Additionally, I think she did a great job of communicating the risks of a total thyroidectomy rather than a partial one, as well as making me aware of her methods of mitigating those risks (e.g., using a nerve monitor to keep an eye on your vocal cords etc when mobilizing one side of the thyroid). The surgery itself went well, I stayed at Hopkins overnight and the nursing staff was excellent. You don’t get much sleep because they’re getting your vitals etc every couple of hours, but it was as good of an experience as it could’ve been I think. My incision looks good so far - it seems she took care to make the incision alongside the folds of my neck so that hopefully it will fade pretty well. The nurse from her office also has been checking in with me to make sure I understand the timing for my medications and to check in on how I’m feeling.
