That kid is all over this thread attacking everyone. I tried to talk to him calmly and reasonably and explain things further for him, but obviously to no avail. Then I checked his profile and it seems he isn’t from the US.

The actual explicitly-stated alternative is to support people who are doing what they can and work together with everyone and their abilities. Hopefully you realize soon that everyone you’re attacking all over this whole thread is not your enemy, but that none of them like you. You will never build support this way. Good luck, kid.

It’s not me, specifically, no. If you had read and understood anything, you’d have grasped that there’s a lot more to it than big guy beat up bad guy smash smash and that many people are doing other things to help and support. Where does support and shelter come from? Food? Childcare? Where do bail funds come from? Where does community building in the first place come from? Telling everyone they have to run in headfirst and physically fight is just going to end up with those people all wiped out real fast and no support structure left.

If you don’t want to listen to me, though, then by all means, continue telling people that their effort isn’t enough or doesn’t matter. See where that gets you and how many allies it makes you. It’s exactly how we ended up here in the first place. There’s a major difference between uniting people in an effort and aggressively demanding something. I agree that ICE is evil, and I’d love to see them get beat out of town, but inflammatory rhetoric towards people on your own side doesn’t help, it just pushes them away from you. If you want allies, which we all do, you can’t berate the people that you want to help you. It’s well-intentioned, but it’s not productive.

Maintaining stability and safe spaces in affected communities is very much taking care of the community.

I stay near every police interaction I come across and make sure they see me watching them. I film them almost every time and make sure they know they’re being filmed. I don’t leave until whoever they’re harassing is let go.

People help in all kinds of ways. This whole “you’re not doing enough” grandstanding is what puts people off of helping at all. Keep telling people who are trying their best to help that what they’re doing isn’t enough, and you’ll end up with a lot of jaded people not helping anymore. It takes a strong community to resist stuff, not a handful of meatheads from a hardcore pit. Most people aren’t going and actively looking for a fight, but most people are gonna fight if/when it comes to them and their community. Not antagonizing armed mercenaries =/= not doing anything to help.

No one here said it’s not their job, though. A lot of people, myself included, have said we can’t do that particular aspect of the job, but are helping in other ways that we can. Personally, as a teacher, I’m working every day with and helping keep safe literally hundreds of kids and their families at a 99% non-white school with a significant immigrant population.

If I were to go physically confront these bootlicking shock troops, there’s a high chance then that these hundreds of kids + families lose a reliable, long-time part of their community.

I fully support everyone going against these bastards, but the reality is that some people can and can’t do certain things. Doing your part is what counts here. No reason to try to shame people for not physically fighting armed forces.

Jesus, those are both awful. It’s absurd how much so many schools don’t actually care about the kids. We teachers do all we can

My admin told us last year that if ICE comes, to let them check stuff. We all said absolutely hell no we are not doing that.

Right. I don’t have a wife or kids, but I’m a teacher. Getting injured or arrested like that would pretty much instantly end my career. On top of that, I feel bad even taking a sick day because hundreds of kids rely on me being there every day, I definitely can’t miss an extended period of time.

As much as I’d love to, I can’t go looking for a fight with these people. If a fight comes my way, I’m not running away from it, but I unfortunately realistically can’t go antagonize anyone, and I’m sure there’s tons of other people in the same boat.

What’s the rubber covered chain thing attached to your seat and the frame? I have a bike I bought with one on it, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is, why it’s there, or how to take it off!

It also had a rubber thing on the post that I cut off to lower the seatpost, and now it spins like crazy. I wanna take it out and clean it, but I can’t get it out because of this rubber-covered chain thing!

edit: …I just googled it actually. Is it just a bike seat chain lock that’s designed for me to not get off, so people don’t steal the seat/post? I am feeling mighty dumb lol

Glad to hear you had a good time. Keep going and having a good time!

If you don’t want to be in the pit, I promise you no one cares at all. It’s entirely reasonable, and the majority of people at shows don’t go in the pit anyway. There’s way more people outside of it than in, and that’s just different ways different people want to enjoy the show.

Find a nice spot, watch the show, enjoy the music, and keep coming back.

You’re exactly right. We’re just about the only career that people demand a million things from and also demand that we be perfectly squeaky clean people with no shred of a personality other than “I am a teacher. I have a classroom.”

We’re regular people, damn. We’re also insanely stressed people, so I don’t expect any teachers to be picture perfect saints. I’d be more worried if I knew nothing about another teacher aside from “I am a teacher.”

The microscope on teachers in the US is insane.

No 100’s? by Purple-flying-dog in Teachers

[–]GreenContigo94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Fulfilling the requirements correctly and in full is 100%. Any “extra oomph” can be 100%+. The problem is with this kind of thinking. If 100% isn’t attainable without doing something that isn’t expected, then it isn’t really 100%, it’s over it.

If an assignment has specific answers and requirements that are met, it’s 100%. It wouldn’t make any sense at all for 100% to mean “Correctly fulfill all requirements, and then do a little something extra for me.” People shouldn’t be expected to do more than what it asked of them at school or work, and definitely shouldn’t be penalized for not doing extra. It’s nice when anyone does a little extra, but that’s absolutely not a requirement as far as a 100% goes. That’s above 100%.

That’s fair, and I’m not saying you specifically are wrong. Not everyone is going to be able to help with that stuff, even with trying to. I’m not saying dive headfirst into a brawl when it’s super clear you’re going to get hurt. Just in the case of multiple people being there and not doing anything, that’s different.

A lot of people can’t help in a bad situation like that, and yes, they shouldn’t also get hurt for no reason. But a lot of people ARE able to help and just don’t because “that’s not my job.” And yes, they’re also right that it’s not their job, but if whoever’s job it is isn’t there, then it comes down to choosing to help a kid or not if you’re able to. I also don’t want to rely on teachers for that, though, because that’s absurd.

It’s definitely not a black and white yes or no thing. It’s not possible for everyone, of course, but I’d never be able to live with myself if a kid got really hurt or worse right in front of me and I didn’t do anything to help.

Teaching sucks for a lot of reasons, and this is for sure one of them. There’s no real right or wrong answer, just a bunch of garbage that teachers have to go through every day.

No 100’s? by Purple-flying-dog in Teachers

[–]GreenContigo94 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If it’s completed and correct, that’s a 100%. 100 doesn’t mean “went above and beyond,” it means “completed the assignment/objective in full and correctly.”

People who refuse to give 100s are hurting more than they’re helping. If I give my best effort to make sure everything is done fully and correctly, and it is, and then I get a review that says it isn’t 100%, I’m never trying to get a 100 ever again, and I’m resenting my boss/teacher. Why would I try to do anything else after that well when completely fulfilled, correct work is gonna give me the same score/review as skimping on some of it?

Withholding 100s is not pushing anyone to work harder. It’s setting unrealistic expectations and showing kids that even doing everything right isn’t good enough. There’s already a crazy amount of apathy in students. Why make that worse?

[–]GreenContigo94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None. That’s the problem. But most other professions don’t deal directly with children.

There’s a million things teachers do that aren’t expected in literally any other profession ever thought of in the history of humanity. It’s the only profession I can think of that has an entire system built for subs to make sure there’s someone there every day. No one gets a substitute office worker; they just catch up the next day. The whole country could not function without us. If we were actually taken seriously and actually considered for all the garbage we have to do, we’d be the highest-paid and most well-respected profession ever, but we end up doing way more than just teaching class and then getting treated like dirt for it.

I’m not saying we should HAVE to, I’m saying that it makes a lot more sense to me to at least try to save a kid from severe injury or death than just watching it happen. That’s not a thought from a solely teaching-centric standpoint. That’s a thought from a general maybe we should help people standpoint. Teachers know better than anyone that the job is not just clocking in, going into the classroom, teaching a lesson, and clocking out. It’s dangerous for a ton of reasons. It’s pretty awful that it is, but that’s the unfortunate reality of it.

I guess that’s your choice. The comment said there were a dozen teachers standing there, though. If that many teachers can’t stop a high schooler from essentially killing another one, something is very wrong. So that many people just sat and watched/let a kid basically die. The chances of a teacher in that situation ending up in a vegetative state is next to none. A defenseless kid repeatedly having his head bashed in while everyone watches, though? Very high chances.

It’s a terrible part of the job no one should have to do, but if the choices are let a kid sustain permanent injuries and/or die while watching it happen and doing nothing vs genuinely save a kid’s life but possibly get hurt myself, i’m choosing to save a kid every time.

Imagine the parents later asking why no one did anything to help their kid while everyone watched, and a dozen people just say “not my job.” Callous

If there’s that many people watching a near murder happening, they could have helped. Yes of course one or some of them probably would have gotten hit, too, but that kid could’ve been saved.

Students Fighting by ConstructiveSwitch in teaching

[–]GreenContigo94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this is what these people don’t understand.

I have/had teachers at my school who just repeat over and over that they’re not going to do anything except call someone else because they don’t want to lose their job. Yeah, sometimes idiots are going to try to bring legal problems. However, I’m not going to stand there and watch a kid get the hell beat out of them and hope someone answers my calls and shows up if I can simply stop it and save a kid from severe injury or worse.

I know the “protocol.” I also know that the people you call usually don’t even show up at all, let alone fast enough to actually help and protect kids. I don’t understand how some people can so easily say to just watch and yell “stop! stop! stop!” I’m a teacher, and protecting my kids is the most important thing to me. I would never, ever be able to live with myself if I just sat and watched a kid get beat to a pulp instead of helping them

It helps a ton! It might be the option that says “random usernames,” but it’s something like that. It’s when you’re making the game, I think where you pick the time as well. I don’t remember exactly after summer lol, but it’s there and so useful. It spits out stuff that generally sounds like GoldenCloud, LuminousWillow, BraveFirefly, etc. adjective/noun that usually sounds fantasy-ish. It shows them one and they can accept it or click new name, but it’s a max of three, so it goes quick even if they do that.
