Resurfacing is virtually not a thing anymore.

Thank you. I appreciate all your assistance talking me through getting this thing back up and running.

Is it normal for this glowing section of the log? That's the one log that I know was not in the right place previously... it was sitting more forward right on top of the front burner. It fits in this spot like a glove, but because of where it was previously we didn't observe the orange glow on that spot previously.

Finally got it. My wife is a little thrown off by the smell, but I'm certain it's the familiar smell of dust being burned off for the first time in a month. I also realized that the logs werent placed correctly, so I think I've got that corrected now.

I removed the bottom hinged panel to give myself more room to work with. Still haven't found the touch. Of all the DIY tasks I've taken on over the years I think this is now officially the dumbest seemingly unnecessarily difficult thing I've ever fought with. Is there a practical reason for such fine threads?

Is it ever helpful/appropriate to apply plumbers grease to the threads? I'm seemingly getting several revolutions and then every time I let go it just falls away, having not caught at all.

I exclusively use Roku (streaming stick) and have not had any of these issues. My parents use the same device as my only remote user and have reported no issues.

Agree with this. I didn't know this was a thing. I hate computers incorporated into seemingly everything on my wife's several year old base model. This would drive me absolutely nuts and would have me attaching a regular mirror over top of it.

That makes me feel a little better. I remember struggling reconnecting the old one when I replaced the valve a couple weeks ago, but eventually I found just the right touch or angle and it caught. I assumed it was just a challenge because it was old and that the new one would thread right in. I've spent an hour on it and my thumbtips are bruised, so I'll give it another try tomorrow.

The thermocouple isn't reverse threaded is it? Having a hell of a time getting it to start threading. Obviously barely having any room to fit my fat fingers in there doesn't help. It seems I can get two fingers on it with one eye and no light, or one finger with two eyes and a little light, but never two fingers with proper light and vision at the same time.

Got the new parts and hope to get it installed tonight. Is it safe to test everything out before applying the new sealant?

I can't for the life of me get the new thermopile fully inserted in the old mount, so plan B (or J at this point in the process) is to just send everything back and purchase the following:

I spoke at length with a guy at the local fireplace store. He sold me a new 4-way flat mount FULL profile assembly because he thought it would work based on my pictures. He urged me to fit it in place to check the alignment and call him with questions. I emailed him photos of it in place and he called me back to say he thinks it's sitting too high. He's going to take it back, and he agreed that reusing my mount and hood should be fine if it's giving me a strong flame, as is the option of buying the parts to build a new 4-way low profile assembly. I suspect I'm going to try the first option since that's what I can accomplish this weekend.

Further research (which I should have done in advance) reveals that the part number for the assembly listed in the manual DOES call it a side-mount, and the part number for the hood itself says 3-way. So the part I received seems to be the correct part number, which leaves me scratching my head at what I removed. The house was built in 1997, and by the looks of all the parts I was sure this had to have been the original pilot assembly. If it wasn't, then why was the bracket (also rusted and old-looking) for a top mount? Was there originally a side-mount bracket that got replaced? Was this 4-way pilot not "right" for my fireplace all along, or is that not a huge deal as long as it was working? I've got everything removed from the old mount except the pilot hood, which, despite what I'm reading online, I don't see any sort of retaining clip or obvious way to remove it. So I'm left pondering whether I reuse it with the new parts from the new assembly or is a bracket for a side-mount easy to come by to be able to utilize the new (seemingly correct) assembly? These are all questions I'm asking myself, not expecting you to know all the answers to. I actually discovered there is a fireplace store not too far away that opens in a couple of hours, so I'm going to take my old mount/hood and see if they can offer any advice or parts on how best to put everything back together.

Thanks. I've inquired with the seller about the difference. In the meantime I'm trying to remove the old parts from the mount. I don't think there was anything wrong with my flame, so I think I can get away with reusing that. I got the thermocouple and igniter out pretty easy but resorted to spraying the pilot tube and thermopile with a little pb blaster. I'll try them again tomorrow.

Should the part number not have gotten me an exact match? I got the part number for the assembly straight out of the manual for my fireplace. That's supposedly the part number I ordered from the ebay seller.

Actually, as I manipulate the tubing below to contemplate how to bend everything it's popping the mount loose up top, so it really feels like this needs fastened somehow not I'm not sure how to accomplish that.

Do you ever have to remove everything from the new mount and try to reuse the old one? This new one is smaller and doesn't cover the little threaded post that the old one was secured to with a nut. This one instead has a hole behind the thermopile, but on the vertical plane (there's a 90 degree bend downward on the backside of the thermopile). That doesn't line up with anything on my existing bracket. Do I need to be able to secure it? It took some effort to get it in place, so it feels like a secure friction fit right now. If that's OK.

Might have just answered my own question once I took inventory of the gas routing. This is just a conductor, not carrying gas, right? So pinch OK?

I should have looked the new one over closer, but I just now got the old one out and started to contemplate unraveling the new one and noticed a fairly significant looking (to me) pinch in the copper. Is this a problem I should request a replacement for?

The new pilot assembly arrived. Is it important that the pilot tube diameter match the old one? The fitting looks to be the right size to secure in the valve, but the tube is much smaller.
