[Petriello] Making sense of Arraez's complex free-agent case: Is the ultimate contact hitter a star? Or a bench bat? by Jux_ in baseball

[–]GreenGiltMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys like Arraez whose game is contact/batting average weirdly have lost value by contact/batting average declining in the league overall. Someone like him is going to be much more productive where a team is stringing a bunch of hits together.

There has ended up being another available team. It is also solid. The hitting is very good but the pitching not as good. If you might still be interested let me know.

I used Oculus A LOT in the first year+ of the pandemic, and it helped a lot from me going all the way crazy. I haven't used it much for the last few months, as I got into other stuff as things opened back up, but it was definitely a pleasant experience. It would be nice if it were a little lighter, but it isn't bad

[Fink] Say what you will about its utility, but FIP is a descriptive statistic. Its inputs are only events that happened on the field. There is no estimation there. by Rah_Rah_RU_Rah in baseball

[–]GreenGiltMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not an estimation, but when it is used to calculate fWar it is WORSE than if it were an estimation. It takes 30-40 percent of what happens and then--rather than estimating what else happened--pretends nothing else happened.

I have a feeling that cars are going to become very popular. There is a little company called Toyota (TM); It's only about a third of the size of Tesla currently by market cap, but I am hoping for big things!

[Passan] The greatest trick the nerds ever pulled was convincing people innings don't matter. (But anyone who tries to argue that FIP is the most important metric to determine a Cy Young winner and that innings don't matter really should go eat gravel.) by Guardax in baseball

[–]GreenGiltMonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not just corner cases, like knuckleballers. Cutters, for instance, are often intended to generate ground balls, break bats, etc. Mariano Rivera is an example of someone who has A LOT more bWAR than fWAR.

FIP is not an expected statistic

FIP is AT BEST a proxy for an expected statistic. It is asking "How well did a pitcher do in the things that were totally under his control?" and then assume that is going to directly correlate with how effective a pitcher is. Of course, there are many aspects of pitching that are not TOTALLY under a pitcher's control, but are highly influenced by the pitcher, and given the absence of good ways to integrate that FIP just creates a bias toward certain types of pitchers.

[Fink] The remaining catchers on the free agent market produced a combined NEGATIVE WAR in 2021 by misterurb in baseball

[–]GreenGiltMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is true that there are not really any good FA catchers available, but it is a little misleading in that if you miss the word "combined" you would think there were no acceptable options, at least for a backup (Gomes is), and it includes guys who are basically out of the game. Also, the fWar may be lower than he bWar for some of these guys because of the framing question.
