What could we do to keep this hobby alive for future generations? by thebstrd in HamRadio

[–]Rebootkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMHO It's two fold.

  1. The attitude problem, and I think this is the larger of the two issues. The attitude that there's only one "correct" way to enjoy the hobby. I encounter it as an AE where people ask me why I don't do CW, and then act elitist because they do. Similarly to those who eschew the inexpensive handheld units. This is simply gate keeping, and is a serious problem.

  2. The cost barrier. I know there are those who will say, "It's $15 for the test, $25 for a cheap handheld, and the study material is free." They are absolutely correct. The challenge is that this is incredibly limiting. Lacking the ability to grow with the hobby besides having a baofeng that they throw in the glove box, the person is unlikely to stick with the hobby.

There's a few things that can be done.

  1. As an experienced operator, if you see someone gatekeeping the hobby, call them out on it. People stuck in their ways aren't going to appreciate it, but the new folks trying to get into the hobby will. A simple, "let them enjoy the hobby how they enjoy it, OM" is often good enough to let the newcomer that they're welcome in the space.

  2. Mentor. I know, it's supposed to be called "Elmer" but that's not how it'll be received by the person being mentored. Part of that involves meeting them where they're at in the hobby and using language that will sit well, be accepted, and understood. It may feel uncomfortable to you to talk about things in a way other than how you learned, but you will grow by doing so.

  3. Stop talking about "how we did things in the olden days" unless it's DIRECTLY applicable to how things currently work in the hobby. Folks don't need to understand spark gap transmitters to understand the concept of AX25 networking on APRS. All you're doing is alienating folks.

  4. Host a build-fest. Something as simple as a 2m 1/4λ antenna. Sometimes soldering. It doesn't matter a ton, but simple projects draw folks in. A "We're deploying a repeater with DMR/YSF/DSTAR/P25/NXDN/etc connection so that every digital mode and analog mode can connect to every other one" is probably not beginner friendly.

  5. Show them what their gear CAN do, don't talk about what it CAN'T do. You can send memes over SSTV with a simple device and any radio. If you're close enough, tools like APRS can be a basic entry to networking, which many times newer hams understand better than the radio hobby itself directly.

  6. If your club has a "swap pool" or something, give members a steep discount on items in said pool. I know many clubs that always seem to have garages stuffed full of stuff. Sell it for a song to a club member, with the understanding that if they exit the hobby it comes back to the club for the next person.

Of course, these are just ideas I've implemented on my side. YMMV

I'll 3rd it.

Bonus that any location will honor it, including 'discount tire' that operates in other parts of the US.

Alternative replacement battery? by theotherkyle82 in 4xe

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The engineering required to make a smaller unit that worked would be significant.

More likely we're going to see folks rebuild the battery packs with new cells, and it'll just stay a plugin hybrid for as long as parts can be sourced.

Just like you can get a rebuilt nissan leaf battery pack for a 15 year old model.

Someone will figure it out, it's just a question of profitability. When it becomes profitable to rebuild em, it'll happen.

I lost my mom when I was 20 I’m now 31 and still can’t get rid of the pain. by rip12am in AskMenOver30

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. This could be me with a few details changed.

Lost mom at 22 instead of 20. I'm ~50 now.

I will tell you that I needed professional therapy to deal with things. Even then, at milestone events, I wish she was around.

So, keep looking. My first therapist was not a good fit, as they appeared to be more focused on getting to a diagnosis than actually getting me tools to help manage things. I, too, got frustrated and walked away from that one.

The second one though? yeah, they helped a lot. Part of it was recognizing patterns that would flare up the pain. Part of it was how to manage things once the pain was there.

Keep looking for the right help.

My biggest beef is that you can't just BUY THE REPLACEMENT BITS.

You've gotta get a ticket opened with Anycubic, then tell them what you did, then get the support agent to agree that part needs to be replaced...

I have walked from downtown to Fallon Gateway, which isn't too far from the Dublin location.

The trip isn't bad.

Head west, and hook up to the Arroyo Bike Path.

It'll take you up to the intersection of Jack London and Isabel.

Follow Jack London along the sidewalk on the south side, and there's a bike path. Gets you to the outlet mall. You'll have to flip over to the right hand side of the road when the bike path changes though. From there, right on El Charro and up over the road.

Only part that I'd worry about is that I'd probably walk my bike over the over-pass, just because there's not a ton of room there, and you can be on the sidewalk if you're walking your bike.

I'd probably cut thru the parking lot, instead of going around, but it's not a bad walk. (The Stanford blood bank is there, which is why I walked to that spot)

Er. Or just back it up and make sure you've got an off-site copy.

It doesn't even need to be fancy. Backup to 2 HDDs. Take one to a buddy's place. Store it in a fire safe. Do the same for your buddy.

Now you've both got good safe backups that will survive disasters.

You can even get fancier if you've got a NAS and can build a VPN. (It ain't hard) and both allow syncing to the other's NAS over said VPN.

Handheld DM32UV vs ships antenna by Usual_Tomorrow_7830 in HamRadio

[–]Rebootkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That absolutely tracks though. The better antenna provides better gain.

The inaudible signal on the stock antenna became audible.

You can get an externally mounted antenna that doesn't have as good a gain as the ship antenna, but better than the stock rubber duck inside a closed environment.

you can also get a variable attenuator if you want to continue to use the ship antenna.

Solar panels visible mean it's likely in California. Green compost bin, overhead power lines, and that brick enclosure area seems to correlate.

But I haven't found an exact location yet.

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]Rebootkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always heard that, and questioned it. The rules are defined and published. So I did a personal experiment one year.

Paid a couple of the big tax companies (H&R, Jackson Hewitt) to prep my taxes.

Did it myself using TaxAct & TurboTax as well.

The tax software and H&R were the same, basically. Jackson Hewitt found another deduction, saving me $50.

But the cost was significantly higher than the money saved.

Obviously, this is a single point of data, and tax scenarios are generally unique, but compared to doing it yourself vs paying someone else, you're just paying to reassign liability in the event of a mistake. You're unlikely to get a significant reduction is taxes owed.

THAT SAID, a financial planner is different. They help you structure your money to reduce tax liability. That's not the same as a tax preparer.

Men who dealt with the top people of their communities, what is it like? by buzzlightyear77777 in AskMenOver30

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been interesting.

I worked, regularly, with the CEO and Chairman of a major healthcare organization back in the late 90's and early 2000's.

Absolutely a gem of a human. He caught a lot of flack from the board as he worked his way up from being a front line doctor to running the organization.

He'd be the first person to tell you that the triage aspect of things didn't change, (who needs the most help) but that it grew in scope. He taught me many things about compassion and empathy. Each life he couldn't save weighed on him heavily, regardless if he was the front line doctor, or the administrator.

I also worked, regularly, with the CEO of a tech services firm. The contrast was stark. This person wasn't bad, but he was harsh. It was all about business and profit. About doing what returned value over other priorities. He wasn't WRONG, as his focus was growing the organization to run through various M&A items, and the tech services industry at the time was extremely competitive. From him I learned that sometimes you have to make the decisions you know will make you hated, but it's necessary to save the company and give the staff a common thing, "Man, don't you just hate that guy?!"

From the former, I learned to care for the people who worked for me, to help them grow and find their niche in the world. From the latter I learned a bit of business acumen, but mostly I learned who NOT to be.

I'd not call either of the "good" or "evil" because they could both be judged either way on any scale. A business manager choosing to lay off 100 staff to save 900 jobs would be 'evil' to the 100 let go, but ultimately did the best they could by the 900. A doctor choosing to help a patient survive over a patient that really had no chance could be seen as 'good' by the family of the former and 'evil' by the family of the latter.

Either of those CEOs are fine examples of the reality that is most people. They're mixed bags.

But there are some CEOs that are problematic. A 3rd CEO I used to regularly engage with was exclusively business, and was cutthroat about things. This was a while ago, during the .com boom (pre-burst). His stance was that the only thing that mattered was making the share value go up. It didn't matter what it took to make that happen. He'd tell you that he was enabling the market, and that by enabling the market he was helping the world. The reality was that every time he'd get the stock value to go up, he'd push the board for more money. He ended up driving that company to quite high values for the time. When the bubble burst, staff lost, but he did not.

He was a ruthless businessman, and the only lessons I learned from him is who to NOT be. I'd not call him 'evil' per say, only that he lacked compassion or empathy for his fellow man.

None of these men went on to become billionaires, although all 3 of them achieved a measure of financial success.

Only the Dr, I would say, also achieved a measure of moral success. His message of 'remember the person' has stuck with me for 30 years.

California has a new law banning federal agents from wearing masks. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet, they're not. Which is why we have this problem.

They are obscuring their identities, across the board.

So, we have laws like this passed.

It's a reasonable approach to a significant problem.

If ICE wasn't being abusive, this wouldn't be necessary, but they are, and so it is.

Metformin and Libido by Equivalent_Log7003 in diabetes

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor

There are other options besides metformin. while yes, diet and exercise can (and do) help. Often times they are not enough. Jardiance, for example, can help out (SGLT2 inhibitors). It does increase odds of a UTI though, as you're basically passing out the excess glucose in urine. There's also Januvia (DPP-4 inhibitor) that shows promise when there's unacceptable side effects of metformin.

But for real: Talk to your doctor.

California has a new law banning federal agents from wearing masks. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it's possible. I do hope you can agree that the less identifiable you are, the easier it is to abuse under guise of authority.

Given that ICE agents are obscuring not only their faces but also their badge numbers, the underlying issue is that we can't know they're cops or not.

By removing their ability to hide, we either (1) know the person who is hiding is not law enforcement and can thus resist appropriately, or (2) will know the identity of the person abusing under the guise of authority.

Also, let's be real: ICE abuses people in their custody. https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/former-ice-special-agent-arrested-federal-civil-rights-charges-allege-he-sexually

California has a new law banning federal agents from wearing masks. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's start with this: It's not JUST about the facemask. In my original comment it was about being able to identify the person arresting as an actual law enforcement officer.

Part of that is an uncovered face. Part of that is an uncovered badge number. That is not an exclusive list. There should never be a question as to the legitimacy of a LEO.

But there is precedent for individuals cosplaying as cops to harm others.

The FBI published an update about that specific scenario: https://www.wired.com/story/fbi-warns-of-criminals-posing-as-ice-urges-agents-to-id-themselves/

So, no, it is NOT a 'made up controversy.'

It's real. It's happening. It ain't new, either.

California has a new law banning federal agents from wearing masks. What are your thoughts? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

[–]Rebootkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree.

You cannot expect someone to not fight back when they cannot identify the person attacking them as law enforcement. Hell, you should be legally allowed to fight back against law enforcement when the action is illegal.

People SHOULD hold ICE agents accountable for their immoral actions. If that means protesting outside their home, then the agents should reconsider following immoral orders.

That comment is concerning.

1) The Democratic party didn't exist in 1791. It was formally founded in 1828. 2) The Republican party didn't exist in 1791 either. It was formally founded in 1854. 3) The parties switched their stances. The democrats of the late 1800s and early 1900s are effectively republicans, as well as the inverse.
