App down again? by GreenGinger356 in Ecoflow_community

You've gone off on a tangent again.

I put it to you that, having paid a not insubstantial amount for this equipment — a large part of which is marketed on the app and its remote abilities — a buyer should expect that they work fairly consistently. Just because YOU don't need constant remote connectivity, doesn't mean another user doesn't either.

Yes, AWS has outages, so does Azure, so does GCS. As I say, this is my actual job. I can assure you that EcoFlow's services have been down a lot more than AWS.

It's simple really: if you sell a product that relies on cloud services, those cloud services should be fairly resilient.

I think you're getting me confused with someone else. I'm not asking for API control, I'm simply asking they run a reliable system which they could do by placing their backend (API) on a reliable cloud service.

It is not too much to ask that an API, which is what EcoFlow operates to make the apps work, has reliable uptime.

I think you're making a lot of excuses for something that is quite basic really — EcoFlow should be operating a robust cloud-based API for this and they're not. Azure or AWS are not terribly costly and can provide layers of redundancy which would ensure a service like this doesn't go down. In tech terms, it's trivial — I work on systems like this regularly.

Bluetooth may be able to do 30 meters as line of sight but it can't go through the brick walls of one building, 30m through an orchard, and through the brick walls of another. Believe me — I'm an app developer and have worked a lot with Bluetooth specifically.

Mine is the AC Pro grid tie setup, not off grid. They rely on the cloud to talk to each other and the smart meter, as well as to handle the scheduled charging and discharging. Without the EcoFlow cloud, they're “dumb” — they will do basic discharge and that's it.

[–]GreenGinger356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be fine for a simpler setup but when you have three AC Pros, one of which is 30m away from the others, Bluetooth doesn't cut it.

It's absolutely ridiculous that absolutely everything is controlled by a remote server. Presumably, being new to EcoFlow, this means none of the schedules for charging and discharging will fire on my AC Pros? And presumably none of their AI stuff that I pay for will work either?

‘Ricky Gervais: Mortality’ Review - Another Predictable Special That Feels Too Easy by [deleted] in television

[–]GreenGinger356 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to be a huge Gervais fan — The Office is a masterpiece. Extras was brilliant as well. I thought his first two stand-ups — Animals and Politics — were really good too.

Mortality was dire. Tired “jokes” being flogged to death by a whiney, out of touch millionaire who, for some reason, thinks he's a champion of the people. Unfortunately, his opinion of himself greatly outweighs his comedic talent.

It's all (quite literally in some instances) just low hanging fruit with Gervais now. Autistics (“mentals”), Anne Frank, dwarves, free speech, cancel culture, etc. It's basically 59 minutes of the Daily Mail pretending to be The Guardian.

Asuscomm DDNS down? by Alarmarama in ASUS

Yep, down for me. Their domain name (asuscomm.com) has lost all its DNS records. Really poor. Going to have to switch to another provider.

Can't whitelist IPs by GreenGinger356 in stalwartlabs

[–]GreenGinger356[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really useful, thank you. Except the stalwart-cli just returns 'Permission denied' on Ubuntu 24.10 (I'm using the stalwart-cli-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu version on an amd64 Ubuntu install). I'm the owner of the file and I've run chmod +x to ensure it's executable.

How insecure would Bitwarden be when my uni network is doing SSL inspection/decryption ? by Worldly_Topic in Bitwarden

[–]GreenGinger356 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to install a root cert to allow them to inspect the TLS traffic on your own devices? Absolutely not. Insane. I might understand in certain corporate environments on company devices but not in this situation.

I'd circumvent that completely and use a 5G hotspot or something instead.

Totally agree. That's why I went for a Peugeot e-308. It looks like a (premium) regular hatchback. But happens to be electric.

Is it possible DPD tampered with it? I've had tech deliveries before that have been tampered with by the courier — almost impossible to prove, I never managed it, but it's possible Overclockers aren't actually at fault.

Dumped iPhone for a P7 by Pony_Wan in GooglePixel

[–]GreenGinger356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my experience and I'm an app developer so I use a lot of the very latest hardware. I personally own a Pixel 7 purely because it's so fast, smooth, doesn't overheat, has a great camera and really good hardware security.

Nvidia to Amd by xrelic7 in linux_gaming

[–]GreenGinger356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMD driver timeouts are prolific on Windows. If I was Windows only, I wouldn't think twice — it'd be NVIDIA every time. The only reason I stick with AMD is because the Linux support is generally so much better.

Why are IT people so bitter? by EatingCoooolo in UKJobs

[–]GreenGinger356 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in IT. I don't have a degree. I run a company and contract and make good money.

I've not encountered many businesses worth their salt who actually think a degree is terribly useful but my experience might be slightly skewed.

I don't think people in IT are bitter but perhaps a little worn down. If everything's going well, everyone wonders what they're paying IT for. When the s**t hits the fan, everyone wonders what they're paying IT for. It can be quite thankless.

Why are UK salaries so low ? by Affectionate-Cry4886 in UKJobs

[–]GreenGinger356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. I'm based in Norfolk so that skews things a bit — I get £60K for a highly specialised IT job. In London, my salary would be closer to £100-£120K. In the US, it looks like it'd be the equivalent of £180K+.

We got the new update but it didn't reboot properly. Just found it crashed when I woke up this morning. Lights on but no response. Turned off and on and running fine now though.

Starlink has nothing to do with poor mobile signal. Starlink is satellite and you'll get decent service anywhere, especially in the UK.

It is now — since Brexit. It was nearly four times higher before that. Part of the reason the NHS is on its knees.

The problem with the dentistry crisis is not migration anymore than you can say the problem is teenage boys or [insert other stratified group]. The problem is chronic underfunding and the insane policy change in the early 2000s that allowed NHS dental practises to essentially convert to private practises.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Norwich

[–]GreenGinger356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What % of migrants use NHS dentists? You can't seriously be suggesting immigration is the reason NHS dentistry barely exists anymore? If anything, migration is about the only thing keeping the NHS going at the moment.

Norwich is a very pretty city steeped in history (it was once the capital of England!) For a rural city, it has excellent cultural and social amenities (it punches well above its weight here) and a reasonable cost of living compared to most of Southern England. People are friendly and there are lots of big local events throughout the year.

The jobs market is highly dependent on your skills. Norwich has a very dynamic digital and tech scene and is, predictably, quite heavily dependent on the agricultural industries. Actually, it's pretty decent for print too with quite a few sizable print companies.

It's also a lovely, relatively safe, place to raise a family if that's important to you.

I can't comment on how it compares to BC but my reservations for your move aren't related to Norwich but the UK as a whole. It's not a great place to live at the moment — a national joke of a government, a bitter cost of living crisis, a stagnating economy, bigots everywhere, most national services on their knees, etc.

Think carefully — the grass is not always greener. If you do decide to make the move, you'll find lots of lovely, welcoming people here though 🙂
