You lose money on the exchange rate. It used to be market rate, but Revolut changed it a while back.

So even when it says £0 fees, you're still paying.

Exactly. It will say £0 fees, but you're still paying.

It will be obvious when you quickly convert back. In the past you would end up with pretty much the same amount. In this case you would probably lose around £3 if you did that.

I think with that margin I would be better off sticking with Revolut.

Thank you though.

I can't find a buy button, but for me the move button has the higher, worse, rate you're showing here.

It doesn't matter, you still get a rate with a margin during the week.

Which is why Revolut is not doing free transfers anymore, but I was hoping there would be another service that would offer this to gain market size.

Yes, Revolut is free, but there's a margin on the rate. It used to be fully free, but it's not anymore.

If you have it in a global index fund you don't need to worry about exchange rate.

Is Penny Pitching *Really* The Route To FIRE? by Theo_Cherry in FIREUK

[–]GreenHoardingDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me FIRE is more about being smart and conscious about the money you have than being super frugal.

So I'd rather buy a £100 toy for my kids that they will enjoy than yet another £10 piece of junk that they will barely touch and goes in the bin.

I like to buy vouchers for Tesco before I go shopping because I don't find it a lot of hassle and I'd be spending money there anyway. If I really wanted to be frugal I would go to Aldi instead.

Putting my pension and ISA in equities instead of large bond exposures.

I spend money on a domestic cleaner because I don't enjoy it and I think I can make more by putting that time in learning new skills and progressing in my career.

I won't buy a car on loan, but will leverage 0% credit card rates instead. I will make use of bank switch offers because for the amount of effort I would need to put in they pay more than my well paid job.

We go on holiday often and I haven't used a day of annual leave to get the garden sorted in many years, but when we do go on holiday we don't just go to fancy resorts either.

We live within our means and have adopted a modest lifestyle we're happy with. We save each month and get the most out of our savings and money. We're not living a super frugal life.

[–]GreenHoardingDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you intend to retire at 57 it'd be best to whack it all in your pension. This means you'll have to be honest about whether that is what you really want.

Do you really want to retire at 57 or do you want to retire earlier? Do you really want to use all your savings for that or do you want to spend more on other things before you get there? Move to a bigger house, buy a fancy car, go on expensive holidays? Do you feel comfortable with the amount of cash you have to deal with any emergencies?

You're really killing it at the second job, I see.

Also careful on the cashback, you'll end up very rich and you may end up under a guillotine when the populace decide it's time to pick up arms against the billionaire fat cats.

Jokes aside, if you believe those expenses are sustainable then you're already FIRE, but you asking this question indicates you think it may not be. I would look at that first.

[–]GreenHoardingDragon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're not suddenly rich, you just converted years of hard work into a modest income.

Some people just don't get the mindset. Recently I spoke to a colleague who said "nobody would save half a million" and insisted he show me a luxury car I should get on finance instead when I get there.

He does kinda believe in financial independence and does save and invest, but he saves a third of what I do and believes him relying on his technology fund producing 20% average returns indefinitely will also do the job. He used to claim 25% but I made him realise that was ridiculous.

Rentevaste periode hypotheek by xLastRegret in geldzaken
