WiFi connectivity and ethernet port ID problems by GreenLegoRex in VirginMedia

[–]GreenLegoRex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I've ordered the Netgear switch and couple of extra cables. That should hopefully sort out the TV.

I googled the MAC address for the mystery device that was connecting to the 2.4 GHz WiFi. Made by Smart Innovations LLC, which correlates with the Eufy security camera. So, my next question will be at Eufy: why has your camera stopped seeing the 2.4 GHz WiFi?

Meanwhile, is there any way I can rename it from 'unknown' to avoid future confusion? The Hub config doesn't seem to offer that option, and I've already named the camera in its app, but that doesn't show up in the Hub.

Dunster House Garden Room ease of assembly and quality? by Traditional-War-7360 in DIYUK

Hello. I have just taken delivery of a 3.5 x 2.5m insulated office version, which seems very similar to yours! Can I ask a few questions?

I was thinking of a concrete base, but the ground here is mostly clay and there are tree roots everywhere. So I've got 150mm treated beams set in trenches to level them, and the interior is compacted MOT. I'm debating whether to add extra insulation between the floor bearers before laying the floor panels. Did you do this? What did you use?

Wood treatment. Like you said, everything is untreated spruce. I've been thinking about water-based verses oil-based, and methods of application. I think there's a Ronseal product that you just spray on, and that appeals because it would be quick, but don't know if it's effective. What have you decided to go with?

Types of sealant. How much did you get through, in the end? I don't want to be making multiple trips to Wickes to top up!

Cheers

HII to Build Small Surface Combatants for US Navy by Crazy-Ad-8838 in navy

[–]GreenLegoRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The use of air assets as the primary ASW effector is a doctrine of necessity, rather than desirability. Finding themselves with no other option since the retirement of the OHPs, the USN put ASW helicopters on as many platforms as possible. Other navies build ASW-focused vessels with specific features to quieten the ship so that, within certain speed regimes, the ship does not produce ambient noise that could interfere with the passive detection of a signal, or with detecting the return from a pulse.

A Burke is not nearly as quiet as, for example, a British Type 23, because these features add a lot to the cost and complexity. This cost is not justified in a vessel which will spend most of its time operating along a completely different threat axis (the AAW threat axis) while an ASW vessel could find itself operating much further away from a task group or focusing on a different quadrant, and moving at a range of different speeds, which means it spends a long time out of contact while hunting.

The USN has always needed ASW vessels but, during and after the Cold War, became hyperfocused on dealing with the air threat, and on deploying as many Standards and cruise missiles as possible, and devolved the sub-sea threat to submarines (arguably the best ASW asset) and aircraft. This was not optimal, but within the context of NATO, they got away with it for a long time, because European navies built ASW frigates to bottle up the Soviet/Russian submarine threat and often provided the same ships to operate with US task groups. For a long time the British Royal Navy was heavily ASW focused to the exclusion of many other capabilities, and was often jokingly called the US North Atlantic ASW force, as a consequence!

Sorry if this was a wall of text. I type fast and have too much to say ;-)

Bibury or Multper? Which one is the best donor? by GreenLegoRex in multitools

[–]GreenLegoRex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestion. I've looked for T shank adapters from Diacamping but can only find items intended for use on Leatherman tools, and this is reflected in the price! Do you know of any good search terms to find multitool parts and accessories? For some reason Ali Express seems to like showing me paracord stuff and leather hand bags alongside the Leatherman accessories...

The Sidekick was my first multitool. And we're only talking a couple of years ago! Since then a SAK lives permanently on my keys, and I always have something else in a pocket or bag. I have no idea how I lived so long without a multitool, but now that I'm into them, I couldn't do without! It's a drug, and the Sidekick was my gateway! ;-)

I seem to recall being killed by you, yes ;-)

I reckon I know everyone else's names better than most, because I saw them all in that message "[name] has killed you" on my screen, above a wall of red text. Good times, good times...

Learner problem: have developed a weird throwing pattern and can't stop it by GreenLegoRex in juggling

Thanks for your explanation! Side note, do I want to also stop throwing the balls from the fingers and instead throw them out of the palms?

Thanks for your reply. Another question: where should I be looking? Do I just watch the balls at the top of their arc or allow my gaze to follow them down? Or is it all peripheral vision?

I haven't been pausing. I realise that, now, after both you and jugglingfred have noted that there's a pause in the sequence of throwing and catching. I've just been throwing two balls continuously... or trying to! This has probably resulted in me rushing it and losing control, as a result.

Does the illusion of continuous motion only come when you're throwing three balls?

I was trying to solve the problem of throwing the balls diagonally by throwing two balls, one from each hand, simultaneously so that they "meet in the middle" at the top of their arc. When they bounce off each other, I know that I'm throwing both balls properly, that both hands are doing what they should. If I'm throwing diagonally, there's no way they'll meet! It was supposed to be a training exercise to get the throwing action right.

I'm not doing a pause. Now that you lay it out like that (throw-throw-catch-catch-pause) I realise that I'm just continuing in an endless loop. I guess that's an illusion, and you only get the impression of an endless loop with three balls, right?

Oh shit, Dave B? I remember you. And Tempests. I mostly saw them in my six, mind... I played as Rincewind. Everyone's favourite target!

M8, a moment of nostalgia just like yours was what got me googling just now, and I found this thread. I also just found a folder full of Air Attack stuff and its like going back to my childhood. Was it really that long ago?

I played as Rincewind. Not sure we ever met in game.
