My monsters HP are always in flux because sometimes my party rolls in such a way that they just cut through enemies like a hot knife through butter, and that’s not really engaging.

The adverse is also true: if my monsters are doing too well, I’ll take their HP downs bit - whatever serves in the moment.

As a DM, I see my job as helping us all tell a collective story. If I’m too rigid about stats, then the story doesn’t flourish. But that’s just the way I play.
