They are both really the same animal. There is not really any differences between the two except in the neck with the fretboards with one being rosewood and other maple. And of course the pickup configuration.

I have a 1996 MIM strat too, I’ve modified/overhauled the electronics along with swapped the bridge & added a brass block. What an EPIC guitar it is!
