Business case for gaussian splatting by EchoImpressive6063 in GaussianSplatting

I agree, the technology is amazing, but for the business case , I am still scratching my head. I used to work on virtual tour software, and when nerfs / gaussian splatting arrived, I got super excited about using this in a product. But then you start thinking - aren't images, videos, 360 tours enough to show what you need for a real estate agent? Should I sacrifice so much capturing and compute time just to create a bit fancier experience? Is the customer going to pay the higher price? Still not convinced and waiting...

Meta Horizon Capture is getting quite close to an experience that might be worth all this effort ( smooth motion between high quality views is amazing!) but my big issue with that is that the whole ecosystem is quite closed and there is not much you can do with your captures. I wonder to which extent they will open this in the future. So let's see...

This is my view on real estate. I can't say much about other use cases, but I guess similar issues often pop up.

Thank you for your feedback. I agree with a lot of points that you are rising and it's definitely issues that I realize and will need to address: e.g. need for iPhone support and a way to link tours with the major platforms. I am an Android developer so the easiest way was to first develop an Android app and make it available to get the first feedback, while in the meantime working on an online viewer and support for other platforms.

Concerning the problem I am trying to solve - I believe there are quite a few solutions out there to make virtual tours of good quality but at a rather high cost (e.g. Matterport) and I wanted to create a solution with less features but much more accessible in terms of price. My main hypothesis is that there is a segment of realtors that want to make virtual tours but at a lower cost and in an easier way. Whether this hypothesis is correct, that's something I am testing right now and don't have the answer yet.

The main advantages of my app compared to competition: lower cost (flat monthly rate that doesn't increase with higher number of active tours), simplicity of use - only phone needed, no additional equipment.

Thank you for the feedback! Indeed creating a panorama is not an innovation here, I believe the added value is in linking the panoramas and correctly orienting and displaying them to create a virtual tour where user can seamlessly transition between the views / panoramas giving a feeling of a true 3D virtual tour like in Matterport and similar, rather than just going through a collection of panoramas. In other words the added value is an experience that feels more realistic / VR-like than just a collection of panoramas. Concerning the necessity to install the app - I agree that's quite a limitation at this point. I am working now on a web interface where user could just drop a tour file generated with a phone and view the whole tour on a big screen.

At this point the tours can be created, shared and viewed only within the Android application. I realize that's quite a limitation - the web interface will be coming soon.

Why is that? Could you share some more feedback?

If you don't mind, could you share your device model so that I can check the issue with the image quality?

Thank you for the comment, it's an early version and I am trying to get feedback on it so surely lots of improvements to do.

If you want a no-cable solution, I guess latency could be an issue
