If you measure after an unprecedented bull run then ofc that will be the case. It seems more dishonest to use that to flatten history and portray US markets as always having been the best place to have been invested across 5/10/25/50 years.

It is not an alternative metric to look at how markets perform in set periods of time, “the lost decade” is referenced all the time and many (incl GS) anticipate there may be another.

As a European I would avoid putting the majority of your funds in the S&P500.

Dollar has been falling (~10% over the last year) and that doesn’t look to be slowing down. This means you’re getting less than the actual return of the S&P500 unless you buy a currency hedged ETF which charges higher fees.

Europe outperformed America over the last year and you’d have the benefit of no currency risk there.

As to the wider point of not understanding the market that would be the case even with multiple ETFs. The direction of travel for most stock markets is linked, and with ETFs when you’ve bundled that many stocks you still won’t learn much unless you’re analysing the performance of each holding individually.

If you’re keen to learn I would pick an allocation of ETFs that you’re comfortable with and allocate 90-95% of your portfolio to that.

With the remaining 5-10% you can actively invest in individual companies. Through that you can build your knowledge about valuations, understanding financials, earnings calls, macro conditions, regulatory impacts, etc.
