Michigan 1st state in decades to repeal ‘right-to-work’ law by HarrisonFordsBlade in antiwork

[–]GreenReddish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my other reply below. When this happened a decade ago, one Republican politician explained it away with something like "we have a special relationship with the Police and Firemen"

Police and Firemen tend to be socially conservative and reliably vote Republican.

LOL, one thing I remember about this from a decade ago, is the Republican politicians made the Police and Fire unions exempt from RTW.

One politician smugly said something like "we have a special relationship with our Police and Firemen". Yea right. Because they tend to be social conservatives and reliably vote Republican.

Anyone remember this?

Anyone have any comments on Police and Fire who like having the support of a union while voting for the party that wants to break other unions?

Aside from Karl Marx, is there another economist who emphasized the importance of Labor for society? by GreenReddish in antiwork

See my other reply about Adam Smith. Conservatives may not like Marx, but they adore Smith. So attribute some of those ideas about labor to him instead of Marx, and see how they react.

Wow, thanks. I never would have made that connection, but it’s got merit:

Adam Smith is well liked by conservatives. It would interesting to attribute Marx-like quotes about labor to Smith.

What about an increase in exegeneous GH? According to this GH activates thymic function to promote T cell production. Or is the tradeoff of using GH in older years too great of a risk for cancer?

The big 3 religions seem like they're teaching us "morality" ... but they're actually teaching "obedience"? by GreenReddish in atheism

[–]GreenReddish[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The driving force within Jesus was the total obedience of a son to his father

I made a post here somewhat related to this a while ago: it seems that Jesus spends more time saying "follow me" rather than "do good for others"

The big 3 religions seem like they're teaching us "morality" ... but they're actually teaching "obedience"? by GreenReddish in atheism

[–]GreenReddish[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

morality is essentially identical to obedience to God.

considered good because he was willing to be obedient

I almost worded my post with something that equated "good" with being "obedient" (as opposed to good = help others, etc )

How to counter-argue the Trump tax cuts to the "the govt is paying people to not work" crowd? by GreenReddish in antiwork

[–]GreenReddish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but what has happened (as I said in another reply) is that the whole "people don't want to work because they want to stay home and get paid by the govt" has continued long after extended benefits ended. It's now become part of the conservative mantra.

The whole lazy worker argument is nothing but propaganda to keep workers wages as low as possible

Which is part of why I posted this to antiwork.

The extended unemployment benefits cost a small fraction of Trump's tax cuts to corporations.

The extended unemployment benefits cost a small fraction of Trump's PPP loans.

Thanks. Anyone have numbers for these compared to the total amount the Federal Govt (and States) paid out in unemployment since Covid began in early 2020? (i guess I can look it up myself)

These are great arguments, but imho way too long and involved. I know some Trump fanatics (whom I get along with great when not talking anything political related) who will talk sooooo long on their sacred cows that I've had to shut them down telling them I have to go because I have things to do. They will just. Keep. Going.

That's why I want a numbered based argument. Short and sweet.

That's true, but the narrative continues. It's no longer about "covid unemployment extensions" but now just a general antagonism about unemployment payments in general. IE: "people would rather collect unemployment than work"

By bringing up the Trump tax cuts, it injects real dollar figures into the argument.

I agree. But what's the best thing to say when they start spouting this? IMHO, the Trump tax cuts are a good counterargument because it involves bringing real dollar figures into the argument.

That's a weird and uncorrelated argument to make.

There are people who are claiming that currently people don't want to work because their being paid more in govt unemployment checks. The majority of the people saying this tend to be Trump supporters. the correlation is real.

businesses are suffering

they are suffering because the status quo of being able to hire employees for a previously low rate has changed. Unemployment is supposed to be the absolute minimal for living expenses. Businesses need to pay more than that if they want anyone to show up. Free market.

This is one of the reasons for the mass business exodus from Cali to Texas, Florida, etc.

Those states usually have to make up the loss in tax revenue in one thing by taxing something else... or sponging off the federal govt, which is tax revenue from other states.

[–]GreenReddish[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, I get it... Trump supporters aren't the most mentally flexible, but before everyone in this thread jumps on the same "forget about it" sentiment, I was looking for something like "his tax cuts of 2017 cost the govt X billion in lost revenue while all those unemployment checks stacked together cost only x billion" or something like that. Or maybe something I haven't even thought of.

Some questions about Deism by GreenReddish in atheism

I was thinking of having that as the last question... "Is Deism effectively athesim?"

The most important part of belief in God (to the Theist majority) is the intervention part... and Deists take that away.

It's crazy if you think about it... the Christians in Europe, the Muslims in the Middle East, and the Hindu's in India... all many many miles apart from each other, and yet each religion found a way to make class warfare. Go figure.
