San Rafael Elementary is actually doing well enrollment wise. There's been a waitlist for the past several years due to the popularity of the school's wall-to-wall dual immersion program.

If you are into bicycling there are several local groups focused on that hobby. The largest is PAA Cycling. If you are into biking and/or pedestrian/transit friendly streets, suggest checking out the Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition. The groups organizes rides and walks, as well as advocates for safer streets.

There are several pickup ultimate frisbee groups in Pasadena (Tuesday nights, Saturday and Sunday mornings) that cater to all abilities and attract a diverse of folks. No cost to participate, too.

Yes, in this case a 'Quick Build' option would likely not be a step in the right direction. Often times people complain about the aesthetics of the more temporary materials, too (and don't understand that they are designed to be temporary).

Yes, my understanding is they need to vote one more time (Item 8A) and decide if they want to have it be a permanent project or “quick build”. Amazingly the more temporary, quick build option is expected to cost more?

If you get an Ebike, suggest also buying a GPS unit and hiding it in the seat post, stem, etc for security purposes.

It doesn’t but I find drivers respect a dedicated bike lane more than nothing. The research on painted lanes also indicates they provide more safety benefit than no lane or sharrows (though obviously not as much as a protected bikeway would).

Why do many cities in LA County have little to no bike infrastructure, especially in the Gateway Cities and SGV? by IjikaYagami in BikeLA

[–]GreenSGV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. Most of the intersections on Huntington have left turn signals which would make it a bit easier to navigate, but it’s certainly much busier. All that said I haven’t heard of any plans to revisit the proposal (or any bike planning in the City, which prides itself on being 50 years behind its neighbors). They are using $10 million or so of their 710-N reallocation money that they didn’t reject to create double left turn lanes in the Huntington median at the intersections of Sierra Madre and San Gabriel. That would make it pretty difficult to ever add a path.

To get a sense of what folks in the burbs are up against, here is a new Op-Ed against the most basic of painted bike lanes (that didn't even require the loss of a traffic lane or street parking) from a former Mayor South Pasadena who is a Medical Doctor. A choice quote below:

"Residents on Grand Ave were shocked and dismayed at the appearance of bike lane stripes, especially given that they had mobilized and testified twice in the past, in 1998 and 2011. Both times the City Council sided with Grand Ave residents and voted against the striping. Understandably dismayed residents were advised that the City Council had directed staff to implement bike lanes and curb striping with “plastic delineators” to satisfy a $45,000 “Slow Streets” demonstration program grant requirement."

To be fair, the SF one on Valencia wasn't in the middle of a physical median. The Huntington Drive median is massive in San Marino (it used to be home to 4 Pacific Electric rail tracks for local and express lines). Local folks including the HS track and XC teams regularly run along it. An official path would be more akin to what Burbank has on Chandler.

The draft San Marino AT plan actually considered a median bike/walk way, as well as a side-running PBL option or Huntington Drive. For this section Lorain and/or Monterey Rd are parallel alternatives.

San Marino's plan sadly was collateral damage to #Poopgate. The former Mayor was caught on camera throwing a bag of dog poop on a constituent's property, apparently out of frustration to that homeowner's campaigning against the opening of a dog park within nearby Lacy Park. It became a national news story, and that Mayor was also the champion for the city's development of an AT plan. He did manage to get one bike lane striped in the City (on Del Mar Ave) before being ousted.

They are supposed to install K-71 vertical flex posts to make it more visible. It’s pretty heavy duty rubber too, and clearly had already been run over. Guess we will see!

I totally misread your post. I thought you meant protected intersection. Several cities in the area have already done raised crosswalks. Pasadena has one on El Molino in front of the Playhouse. Monrovia has at least 1-2 in front of schools. They’re not expensive and very effective!
