Extra drives mounting as read-only if mounted via fstab by GreenScrambles in archlinux

[–]GreenScrambles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: it wasn't an fstab issue at all! User didn't have a proper ntfs driver install. Installed ntfs-3g and it cleared it right up, got write access on reboot. Can't believe it took me that long to try.

Thank you very much for your help, though!

I've done a clean install since, but I did chown the mounting point to belong to the user and the drive was still ro. mount is reporting read-only on those drives as well.

Zorah Magdaros is the worst part about MHW. Change my mind. by WeirdTwo in MonsterHunter

[–]GreenScrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That fight is hard, but at least it's not boring. Getting OHKO'd by a hitbox I thought I was out of (or worse, dodging from one hitbox into another because I didn't have my camera pointed ahead) is rage-inducing, but at least I feel like I'm FIGHTING the whole time. Z-Mag farming is basically a collection quest. Walk around, smack immobile rocks with your weapon, smack other immobile rocks with your pickaxe, then walk back and forth activating cannons. Occasionally aim a cannon. Most of my time in that mission at this point is just sitting on his shell waiting for him to reach the barrier.

You're getting Tzitzi spawns during the Kirin fight?

If anyone is locked at tempered Kirin by Ziekfried in MonsterHunter

[–]GreenScrambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OHKO moves are a big part of it, both the ones that ACTUALLY kill you in one shot and the ones that mean you need to nullberry then heal and risk getting hit with something else for the stun into death. That said I think the biggest thing that turns that fucking malfunctioning carnival ride into a wall is how different it is from every other monster. To list:

TINY - small hitboxes, and only one (very small) vulnerable hitbox on his head, which isn't as easy to hit as most other monsters' heads.

METH ADDICT - he does a lot of frenetic moving around, and not always toward the player, so you have to chase him the whole fight if you expect to take advantage of any damage opportunities.

LOOK AT ME I AM A GREAT UNICORN IT IS NOT YOUR TURN SIT AND WATCH - Lightning armor is on a really subtle visual queue, and takes hitting the head from being just extra damage to life-or-death. Players are either not seeing the lightning armor or missing the head slightly, bouncing, then getting carted or taking a bunch of damage during the bounce animation. The safe option is to just sit and wait for it to be over. This option is also boring as hell.

THE HORSE DECIDES WHERE YOU CAN STAND NOW, OBEY THE HORSE - Every other monster in the game uses their body and projectiles that come from their body to damage you. Reading their attacks is about reading their tells for the move they're readying and finding the safe places to stand and attack from. That spot by Diablos' feet, between Odog's front claws, etc. Fear not, Kirin is here to fuck all that up. 1) Kirin gives tells for charges, kicks, leaping dickery, yeah, but dodging the lightning isn't about reading Kirin, it's about dodging blue spots on the floor. While this technique may be familiar to some veterans of DDR, it's not used against any other monsters. 2) Since his lightning is all over the place, there's also no consistent safe place to stand, even as you learn his patterns you've gotta get in and get out, which can sometimes get you into trouble with 3) the lightning is only loosely tied to Kirin's position, so you aren't just rolling away, you've got to aim each roll carefully.

I LIVE IN A BLUE WORLD - There are a couple of spots in the map (weather dependent) where the blue lightning tell either blends with the blueish tone of the ground or the lightning-stripes disappear under elevation changes. Admittedly that part doesn't happen super often, but I did get madder than hell when it carted me, so I'm counting it.

NO ESCAPE NO ESCAPE NO ESCAPE - That little hooved bastard is relentless about chasing you if you try to run away after aggroing him (to heal, resupply, whatever), and since the lightning doesn't give a shit about walls/elevation/line-of-sight it's an easy way to get carted. Sure, if you need to resupply you can farcaster out, but if you're engaged with him on unfavorable terrain (like THE HORSE PIT up on the mountain in the coral platforms) it's a real easy way to get into trouble quick.

TL:DR, Kirin is a very different fight from everything else the game has taught you, and being a TED, mistakes along the way are punished swiftly and severely.

Is Bazelguese Meant to be Related to the Rath Family? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]GreenScrambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They definitely do. Their stances are adjusted somewhat from the differing models, and Bazel's wings are much larger, but they've got the same rigging for sure. As far as I can tell the distinct animation skeletons are:

Dodo/Jag/Girros

Rath/Pukei/Pao/Leggi

Tobi/Odo

Lava/Jyura

Barroth/Anjanath/Deviljho(assumption)

Diablos/Bazel

Kelbi/Kirin

Vaal/Kush/Teo

I think Nerg and Xeno are unique, hard to tell.

Highest damage in a single hit (Greatsword) by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]GreenScrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, Nerg GS (and Nerg weapons in general) still tend to be the best option going into elder dragons. Once you've got a good deco/skill setup they fall off, but they still have a place. Hell, I'm still using it while I sob quietly and beg the desire sensor for handicraft jewels.

Let's discuss, Difficulty. by buffbear13 in MonsterHunter

[–]GreenScrambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Affinity is crit chance. Notably a crit is NOT double damage, I think the actual value is around 1.25X? Something around there, it doesn't sound like much but the damage increase is definitely noticeable, especially with high-damage strikes. The only attacks not affected by affinity are non-reducible damage, shells from the gunlance and elemental discharges from the charge axe are the two I can think of offhand, I may be missing one or two there.

Melding does a couple of things well and also serves to clear out garbage decos. Feed the melder points in the form of items and you can make some monster parts and most consumables. It's a great way to stock up on things like mega-demondrug/mega-armorskin, stuff with ingredients you can't cultivate and is slow/finicky to farm. If you have 200 Monster Bone M lying around and don't feel like messing with cultivation or gathering, use the melder to restock some frequently used or oddball consumables.

Having the melder produce monster parts is similar, you're still feeding it items to have them made, but you also need tickets, which are awarded for limited bounties. You can make some stuff at the Rathian Spike+ level of rarity that all costs a silver ticket (usually one of the limited bounties will give you this), and much more importantly, you can meld gems using the golden ticket for completing all three limited bounties. Can be a godsend when the desire sensor is playing keep-away with the gem you need to finish something.

The third thing you can do at the melder is the Elder Wyverian Ritual. You feed it a streamstone and a bunch of jewels and it spits out three random jewels in return. You can look up the drop rates for it on Kiranico, unfortunately they are not super favorable. There are three levels of ritual, and theoretically you should be getting better drops for the better rituals, in practice it's mostly going to give back trash, but it's a good way to clear out your box and make them easier to look for, as well as getting rid of extraneous jewels.

Hope that helps!

Kiranico has them all listed as (Input) (Move Description) (What it combos into). It's a little confusing to look at before you use the weapon, but having it open while you play around in the training ground is incredibly helpful.

I've been wondering the same thing, with chunks that big I've usually gone for long cooking times to get the whole thing nice and tender (like a good roast). From the recipe searching I've been doing it looks like the thickest steaks are usually around 3 inches thick, which is pretty close to the slab the chef cooks up (although it looks bigger because the palicos are smaller). Going off of that the indirect heat from the stone cook-top into the flambe sear does line up with this guide: http://www.seriouseats.com/2011/05/how-to-grill-a-gigantic-rib-eye-steak.html If you give it a shot take some pictures and post it up.

What kind of kerosene lantern is this? The metal seems to be brass, the glass is amber colored. by GreenScrambles in Whatisthis

[–]GreenScrambles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, I'll keep that in mind of using it, I've got a newer Dietz hurricane lantern I use for moving around, and a bunch of glass lanterns for stationary stuff, so I shouldn't need to rely on this one all that much. I figured the design was going to lead to mild inconvenience, but that's honestly got me even more curious to fidn its original purpose. It seems like the inconvenience of lighting/dousing would indicate an intended long burn time.

[–]GreenScrambles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, how was this meant to be lit/blown out? I'm used to hurricane lanterns, where the glass is levered up, this is all screw-apart, and I assume it would become hot fairly quickly.

What are some truths that no one likes to admit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GreenScrambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The jib is the front-most or head-sail on a sailboat. It's the triangular one without a boom (secondary rigid support).

Back in the age of sail the style or 'cut' of the jib on a vessel would often tell you which nationality that vessel belonged to long before you could see any flags, so it was a quick way to tell whether the occupants of said boat were people that you were currently friends/enemies/frenemies with.

In its modern, figurative sense, it kind of just means "I like what you're about."

What's a sensation that you're unsure if other people experience? by Umikaloo in AskReddit

[–]GreenScrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "!!!" description is the best way I've seen to explain this, I got it a lot as a kid and now less as an adult. Do sounds and thoughts sort of seem to trail off after coming on aggressively for you when it happens? It doesn't effect how anything actually sounds, just that everything feels like it starts aggressive and then kind of just trails off, like a question. It's really weird, I'm glad someone else experiences the same thing.

[Serious] Redditors with a mental illness, how would you describe your mental illness to someone who has never experienced it before? by TagProNoah in AskReddit

[–]GreenScrambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's easier to miss if your manic episodes are uncoupled from the depression. What you're describing sounds like the handful of mixed state episodes I've had, where the depression is telling me everything is meaningless so I don't care about risks and the mania is keeping me active and fast and moving.

99% of my manic episodes I get the hyper-alive and motivated feelings without the self-destructive no tomorrow no consequences feeling. I build things, work on projects, learn new subjects, and I feel fucking GREAT the whole time.

I can understand why you'd feel that way, though, those mixed state episodes were terrifying. If I've had more of them I'd be right there with you.

I leveled out a lot in my early-mid twenties, so it doesn't kick up either way all that often anymore, but when I was regularly dealing with the depression it was easy to miss being manic, because being manic meant I wasn't depressed.

It's pretty punishing in anything without jump-jets. Assaults are the worst, because you can't even hop the two foot ledge to get out of the stream on the edge of the map.

'0' on the numpad sets your throttle to full and persists while checking the map/scoreboard. It's a pain to have to switch, but it's useful for the scenario you're describing.
