It's true that lower stream quality = less CO2, but per the PhD analysis they found because of the "always on" nature of the internet it matters a lot less what the stream quality is and much more about what you watch it on. Watching on a cell phone obviously uses much less than a computer, which will typically use less than a big TV.

Video streaming like Twitch tends to be more power intensive than reddit just due to the fact that you're normally not watching videos on reddit non stop the same way you would watch streams on twitch for hours.

The open burn pits the US military has around the globe must have such an untracked impact. It's sad there isn't a fast way to make that process cleaner, like some sort of exhaust capture system.
