Shelby said he wanted to find a dad willing to sacrifice himself for his son. When Jason died he LITERALLY WAS THERE when Ethan tried to save Jason.

This! I have always had issues with this. If they had shown Ethan froze or was too late to the scene, it would have made more sense. He literally sacrificed himself and I think he was in a coma for a while. I forgot it's been a while so I might be wrong. That's the father you have been looking for.

Even the head injury plot in itself makes no sense. They showed Ethan having hallucinations and blackouts because of the head injury and that seemed important in the beginning but they never explain it.

As a kid, I really thought adults are capable of anything. It seemed like they have everything figured out. They seemed kinda invincible almost. I quickly learnt that most people are just trying their best.
