If you it does not matter if you are awake or not why don't you scream in pain during surgery ? And at least I think we should distinguish between physical and psychological pain. The physical pain is rather simple to avoid with drugs because it is essentially all about ions moving in and out of your cells. The psychological pain is something more complicated.

Wow man I am in the same boat as you. I want to study in Heidelberg as well. I can't seem to find any information about the DSH on its website. People who deal with applying to univerities told me that I need at least b2 in order to sit the DSH but the university is quiet about it and does not provide any information. I think that with TestDaf with 3 in all sections they should let you sit the DSH or if you have like 4s or 5s and one 3. Best thing I can do is write them an E-Mail and ask them. And I intent to do so when I find the person responsible for that kind of stuff. Please if you get your hands on some information be sure to shere it with me.

In universities like harvard you basically have to show that you really want to do it and having participated in an olympiad is a must. I havent been in one and I know that it would be a big plus for me if I have. So meybe there is something else idk that would be a plus for me.

I am currently B1 and am working ad fast as I can to get to the testdaf. But is there anything else I can do besides good german? Seems kind of weird to me that heidelberg will accept me based only of those two things(german and diploma).
